As a Senior Surveyor you will play an important role to help us improve, maintain and preserve our wonderful waterway network for our customers to enjoy today and into the future.

Working within the Investment and Commercial directorate, the purpose of the role is to deliver income growth and maximise income opportunities within the Utilities business area. This role will involve reviewing new and existing income opportunities, managing debt, providing advice to other business units on Utility matters, and extending the service offered by the utilities team.

The role

As a Senior Surveyor you will be responsible for a portfolio of property agreements, triggering and negotiating reviews, undertaking renewals and regearing existing contracts, assignments, and other transactions through the full process including reporting for approval, and ultimately instructing and managing solicitors through to completion. You will report to the Principle Utilities Surveyor, working closely with other regional surveyors, the wider Estates teams, and expected to work collaboratively with many teams from other directorates.

About Utlities

Our role is to add further value to the utilities portfolio, which generates in excess of £25m p.a. for the Trust. Among others this consists of hydro schemes, wind turbines, telecoms installations and surface water discharges agreements.

Location & coverage

Remote working from home - with opportunities to work from any of our current Hubs: Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Leeds, Hatton, Newark, Birmingham Milton Keynes, Gloucester & London.

This is a national role but there will be an expectation that you will be able travel to attend occasional meetings or conduct fieldwork throughout the waterway network. The regularity and flexibility will be discussed further at interview stage.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key Accountabilities

  • Negotiation of premiums and annual licence fees with 3rd parties in relation to their use of the Trust's land.
  • Working with the Business Development Manager to identify opportunities for the development of energy projects on Trust land including Battery Storage, Electrical Vehicle Charging and other Renewable Energy opportunities
  • Maintaining excellent relationships within the property, telecoms, gas, electricity and water sectors to identify growth opportunities and deliver these.
  • Keeping abreast of current changes in utility and regulatory legislation to spot new areas of business into which the Trust may profitably venture.
  • Effectively and efficiently negotiate licence reviews and renewals ensuring the Trust receives fair and sustainable income.
  • Protect, promote and develop Canal & River Trust's assets that contribute to the Trust's aims to improve safety and increase the number to people using the waterways whilst protecting the heritage and integrity of the inland waterway network.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) with 2 years post qualification experience, desirable.

Technical:

  • Experience within the Property and/or Utilities field.
  • Familiarity with the law relating to Utility business; (particularly statutory powers).
  • Ability to manage complex, multi-faceted disputes.

General:

  • Strong verbal communication skills at all organisational levels.
  • Strong negotiating, influencing, diplomatic and project management skills.
  • IT Skills including business applications software, eg, MS Office. Experience of using property management software; SAP skills and knowledge an advantage.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to a deadline.
  • Friendly, approachable, confident manner.
  • Excellent prioritising and time management skills.
  • A team player.

Driving licence is essential and use of your own vehicle. Business travel will be reimbursed within the HMRC rules for non-taxable business travel cost.
