Person specification

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse - diploma / degree level nursing qualification
  • Educated to Degree level in relevant clinical speciality or equivalent combination of post graduate diploma, courses and experience
  • Teaching and/or mentoring qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Specialist training to degree / post-graduate diploma level in Infection Control / Health Protection

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum of 2 years at band 6 in infection prevention and control nursing
  • Evidence of leadership and change management experience
  • Experience in the clinical setting in carrying out audit, surveillance and delivering teaching packages
  • Experience in implementing infection prevention and control policy
  • Comprehensive clinical experience (minimum of 5 years post qualification), with knowledge of management of invasive and medical devices and related clinical procedures

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in community healthcare
  • Experience in leading a project

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention across different care settings and disciplines
  • Leadership skills
  • Able to assess, teach and demonstrate clinical procedures, such as aseptic non touch technique, taking of nose, throat and wound swabs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and non-verbal skills
  • Able to build effective working relationships
  • Able to communicate complex and/or sensitive information to patients and staff, where there may be barriers to acceptance
  • Able to assess and interpret information, e.g. microbiological results, assess risk and apply advice to local situation
  • Computer literate, word processing, spread sheet, presentation and data skills
  • Able to provide training and education
  • Able to cope with unpredictable work pattern and to work under pressure
  • Able to plan workload and set priorities according to the needs of the service and annual work programme
  • Able to be accountable for own professional practice and work autonomously
  • Able to undertake clinical audit and surveillance

  • Awareness of own limitations, ability to assess and filter information and escalate as needed
