Working Hours: 37 Hours Monday - Friday

The Canal & River Trust is a charity entrusted with the care of over 2000 miles of canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs in England and Wales. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the nation's strategic and local blue-green infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways contribute to the health and well-being of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. They also play an important role in mitigating the impact of climate change and provide valuable habitats and much-needed biodiverse corridors for wildlife.

This is a pivotal moment in the Canal and River Trust history as a charity. With the government announcing future cuts to our statutory funding there is increased ambition and investment to grow income from other charitable sources . The Canal and River Trust is committed to growing its fundraised income and has developed ambitious targets for fundraising over the coming years.

We are currently looking for a Trusts & Grants Executive to join our team. This is an exciting role within the Philanthropy & Partnerships team which will help the Canal and River Trust to deliver significant growth in income. This role supports the Senior Partnerships Manager in strategic growth and income generation for the Partnership team, focusing on expanding relationships with trusts, foundations, and other grant-making bodies.

A key part of the role will involve identifying and maintaining a personal portfolio of small to medium trusts, overseeing grant processes including reporting, and ensuring compliance with funding procedures to enhance teams efficiency and accountability. The ideal applicant will have experience:

  • In pipeline research and development for Trusts and Grants; working with local regions to identify opportunities.
  • Account managing existing funders and support organic growth.
  • Creating, monitoring and developing administrative tools that allow us to better log key information (such as follow ups, events, etc) and track progress.
  • Have some experience of effectively using a CRM system for fundraising - specially for reporting purposes.

Location

This role will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces for team working and collaborative meetings. Hubs we can assign to you include: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Newark, Birmingham, Hatton, Milton Keynes, Gloucester & London

Applicants will need to be located to easily access our office locations Birmingham to attend face-to-face team meetings (once or twice a month). The regularity & flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key accountabilities:

  • Strategic Income Growth Support: Assist the Senior Partnerships Manager (SPM) in developing and delivering the growth strategy for the Partnership team's income.
  • Partnership Development: Work with the SPM to cultivate and expand a pipeline of both existing and new charitable trusts, foundations, and grant-making bodies, securing a diverse range of funding opportunities.
  • Proposal and Project Prioritisation: Collaborate with the SPM to develop prioritised projects for donors.
  • Fundraising Calendar Coordination: Support the SMP develop a grant fundraising calendar that outlines application deadlines and reporting dates, supporting relationship management with grant-giving organisations.
  • Portfolio Management: Manage independently a personal portfolio of small to medium trusts and foundations, producing high-quality proposals, applications, and reports for submission to existing and prospective grant-giving bodies.
  • Grant Process Support & Oversight: Ensure all approval, grant receipt, and reporting processes are adhered to by the team, under the guidance of the SPM.
  • Trust Values Advocacy: Uphold the Trust's values and behaviours at all times.

About you

Technical:

  • Proven experience of working within a fundraising team in a large and complex organisation.
  • Experience of researching charitable trusts and developing fundraising pipeline plans.
  • Experience of developing quality proposals and/or stewardship reports to funders.
  • Experience of effectively using a CRM system for fundraising.
  • Experience of fundraising in the Heritage or Environment sector is desirable.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and strong attention to detail.
  • Motivated by the cause of the Canal & River Trust.
  • Ability to manage own workload and prioritise multiple tasks, work under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • Positive team player with a professional, solution focused attitude.
  • IT literate and numerate.
