We are currently seeking an Works Engineer t o join our Infrastructure Services Team (West Midlands) to manage Third Party Works.

The teams function is to help promoters achieve their objectives, transform the waterways and enrich lives, while at the same time protecting our customers, infrastructure, buildings, heritage and waterway environment from harm or damage that could result from the promoter's work. The team recovers fees and charges which go to support the work of the Trust, and handles approximately 300 different schemes per year offering a completely varied work load.

The team links with other teams within the Trust on behalf of the developer to find the necessary solutions to undertake works that will, where possible, enhance the waterway and environment. The successful applicant will gain engineering knowledge and negotiation skills whilst working on a variety of schemes. This makes the workload completely variable which adds to the attraction of working in the team.

Day to day, you'll have a busy and varied caseload of third party engineering works to manage taking place on or around our waterways and you'll also be engaging with developers and other key stakeholders to ensure our customers are kept safe and that works don't negatively impact the character or heritage of our waterways. The Trust recovers fees and charges for third party works undertaken which go to supporting the wider work of the trust, so income generation is a key part of this post.

Location & coverage

The role will be based working from home, with the allocation of a nearby Hub for collaborative working in Birmingham.

This is a regional role and there will be an expectation that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout regional, West Midlands, network.

Willingness to travel will be essential to accommodate the frequent visits and meeting requirements at our regional HUBs or occasionally other meeting venues or Trust hubs, canals in the West Midlands r egion and with Promoters at their sites or offices.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

If you have a passion for engineering, then you'll know what this takes - continuously improving your engineering knowledge, working across the Trust to find solutions, negotiating improvements to the waterway environment wherever possible, as well as having an organised approach and a commitment to accuracy. You'll also be comfortable working with databases and meeting deadlines and other targets.

For graduates and newly qualified engineers, you'll develop your engineering and negotiating skills by working on projects supported by managers and colleagues across the Trust. If you are a more experienced engineer, we can support you to expand your knowledge and experience with a variety of interesting work .

Key accountabilities:

  • Assessing/managing/ensuring third parties undertaking engineering/construction works on or adjacent to CRT's estate with potential to affect CRT's interests are planned and undertaken safely.
  • Provide technical support to CRT internal specialists teams by working efficiently to defined standards and procedures to ensure conservation and protection of the condition of the waterway assets.
  • To ensure compliance with statutory requirements and internal Codes of Practice.
  • To protect CRT's interests including; customer service standards, environment and heritage.
  • Liaise with CRT internal teams including estates, operations and environmental, to ensure the internal consultation processes are met.
  • Promote early involvement, safety and recover costs from third party projects.
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Report incidents, accidents and near misses.
  • Using SAP and GIS systems, ensure all relevant information and analysis is input in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide engineering advice and support to third parties and internal teams, to assist in the resolution of engineering-related situations.
  • Contribute technical advice covering feasibility, detailed design and build-ability of third party projects taking account of Canal & River Trust standards and external standards including heritage and environmental issues.
  • Provide a point of contact for technical queries internally and externally. Respond as appropriate by providing advice and reference to relevant information sources.

About you

Technical:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive relevant experience of site engineering, H&S, contractor management.
  • Proven experience of inspecting / delivering civil and/or construction engineering activities.
  • Proven experience in assessing infrastructure risk.
  • Demonstrable experience in cross-functional working delivering performance across range of functions.
  • Experience of engineering in the water environment, desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, desirable.
  • Professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline, such as Degree or HND in Civil Engineering, desirable.
  • Membership of relevant professional body e.g. ICE, desirable.

General:

  • Experience in the delivery of excellent customer service standards.
  • Able to provide a good standard of written communication and proven ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences.
  • Able to support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate.
  • Must hold a current valid driving licence - company car allowance will be provided.
