Projects (Energy) Senior Associate

'[A] firm of great experience in energy matters and has a thriving renewable energy practice' and the team includes 'thought leaders in the decentralised energy and energy technology market'.

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our Projects team. This role will have a particular focus on the renewable energy sector.

You will become part of a thriving team and involved in a wide variety of transactions and projects in the sector. The ideal candidate will have both energy M&A experience and either commercial energy/energy regulatory experience, but there will be some scope to tailor the role to the candidate's skillset.

You will be given early responsibility for building client relationships and business development whilst working in a collaborative and supportive team environment.

The practice

Our Projects team offers clients expertise across the full project lifecycle from initial project set-up/acquisition, through project development, financing, operations and exit. We have been at the forefront of many of the recent market developments and have an exciting pipeline of work and opportunities we are developing (which includes solar, wind, storage, biomass and energy-from-waste, green hydrogen and electric vehicle charging).

Our offering is broad and our extensive practice represents investors, developers and lenders across a range of sectors in the UK and internationally.

Energy is a specialist area that requires a combination of industry and market knowledge together with legal and risk management expertise. Our international team has a reputation for successfully delivering first-class support in all segments of the energy and infrastructure markets. Senior Associates in the Projects team can therefore expect an interesting range of work with exposure to a range of different technologies, markets, structures and clients.

Within the Energy sector we are widely acknowledged as the leading adviser on the move to a decentralised and decarbonised energy industry and adoption of innovative energy solutions and have adopted decarbonisation as one of the themes underpinning the firm's Transformational strategy.

In addition to energy, our Projects team is also active in the infrastructure sector and has particular expertise in education, universities, healthcare, rail, roads, airports and related transport infrastructure. Outside of the UK, we have market-leading energy and infrastructure specialists in all key European hubs. You will be part of our Projects team which provides sector-focused energy expertise for a diverse range of energy projects and the commercial agreements and regulatory frameworks that underpin them.

The work

The team's reputation is particularly for the following:

  • We are widely acknowledged as a leading adviser on the move to a decentralised and decarbonised energy industry and adoption of innovative energy solutions. We work for clients across the energy industry and those served by the industry to address the dual challenges of the move to Net Zero and of balancing affordable and secure supply and demand and energy resulting from the intermittency of distributed renewable generation as developed economies move towards a sustainable low carbon position.
  • We have an established and well-respected position as one of the leading solar and BESS practices (regularly advising on around 450MW of solar projects per year - enough to power 395,000 homes).
  • We are a trusted long-term adviser to many of the major UK energy utilities.
  • We also have strong relationships with many of the key investors in the energy sector.

Recent work completed by the firm within the Energy sector includes:

  • Advising Statera on the £300 million development and financing of a 300MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project and a 270MW gas peaker plant, both co-located in Thurrock, Essex.
  • Supporting HyCap on its series A investment in YamnaCo - an early-stage company which is looking to invest in and develop gigawatt-scale green hydrogen and ammonia projects in the Middle East, Africa and globally, with a view to potentially becoming a competitor to Big Oil.
  • Advising the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership on the development of the Standardised Technology Demonstration Agreement (STDA) to facilitate the demonstration of offshore wind innovation products and solutions.

The team

The Projects team is split between Bristol and London with 9 Partners; 1 Legal Director; 5 Associate Directors; 4 Senior Associates; 9 Associates; 6 Trainee Solicitors and 1 Solicitor Apprentice. You will have the opportunity to work directly with a number of Partners in the team, reporting primarily to Hannah Roscoe. You will also regularly work with lawyers from other parts of Osborne Clarke.

Technical skills and experience

You will have knowledge and experience of transactional energy work and the ideal candidate will also have experience in commercial energy arrangements and/or regulation, which will have been gained at a well-respected firm in this field. As a guide, due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are ideally looking to appoint a Senior Associate with a passion for this area, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.

Your career development

Like all our lawyers, you will benefit from our multi-award winning career development programme. At each stage of your career this provides you with:

  • clear expectations of your role and what it takes to progress;
  • high quality clients and work, with early responsibility and client exposure;
  • thorough assessment and individual feedback from a range of experienced colleagues;
  • robust technical training with early skills based development, increasingly tailored to you; and
  • reward for your contribution, progression and potential, rather than PQE or tenure.

Salary and benefits

We offer competitive salaries and generous benefits.
