Your role as a helm will help support our operational teams of colleagues and volunteers to complete projects in a timely manner.
This is an interesting role that gives you the opportunity to try helming our work boats on the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. You will have the chance to make a huge difference by making sure our boats are where they need to be.
Why we want you
Our Helmspeople are essentially the people who are part of our team moving of our boats across the wonderful waterways network. Your role as a volunteer will help support our operational teams of colleagues and volunteers to complete projects in a timely manner.
What you will be doing
This is an interesting role that gives you the opportunity to try helming our various crafts. Whether it is moving our 70ft hoppers filled with materials, or simply moving a tug from point A to point B you will have the chance to make a huge difference by making sure our boats are where they need to be.
Some of our boats need additional endorsements (e.g. crane boats) and these are dealt with on a craft by craft basis.
When you register as a volunteer, we will ask you about any unspent convictions which you need to declare and risk assess these as needs be.
The skills you need
Friendly – you’re the skipper in charge of the team on the boat
Reliable – boats often need to be in the right place at the right time for operational reasons (e.g. changing a lock gate, repairing a bridge).
What's in it for you
The opportunity to spend time outdoors, on the water and see sections of the waterways that some don’t see
Experience moving different craft to ensure that those teams can achieve what they need to
