Our Team

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Mechanical & Electrical Engineer to assist in the management of infrastructure risk on our waterways.

You will be providing technical expertise, taking charge of our M&E Safety forum and practices, assisting and providing back-up to the Principal Engineer and Regional Senior M&E Engineers as and when required and using your experience and knowledge to assist in the development and usage of our new Trust CMMS. This role will primarily be Northeast / West focused but on occasion may require you to assist in other regions. The role will require the holder to be part of an on-call system; currently one week in seven. The role does not currently include Line Management but could grow in-time to taking charge of the Northwest/East MEICA delivery Teams.

You will be joining us at exciting time as we are currently developing a new asset strategy approach to prioritising priority projects and priority works. Joining our talented team, you'll help continue to build on the strong foundations of work completed to date and take on unique and interesting challenges of our M&E portfolio and associated projects.

Location & coverage

Our Senior M&E Engineer role will be offered on a remote working basis but travel nationally will be required along with travel to hubs e.g. Leeds, or Birmingham for internal meetings. The regularity & flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key accountabilities:

  • Jointly take charge of the MEICA Safety Forum, building out and developing our MEICA safety practices in accordance with internal and statutory regulations.
  • Jointly prioritise and technically manage the Trusts new M&E maintenance programme for the Northwest/east including assisting to define maintenance schedules and frequencies, carrying out audits, inspections, and validating fitness for purpose of M&E assets.
  • In time to use outputs from maintenance programs to improve asset performance and deliver efficiencies.
  • Responsible as primary Senior Authorised Person (SAP) nationally.
  • Assisting the Delivery Manager, Regional Engineers and Principal Engineer, Maintenance and Inspections, in delivering work nationally and occasionally representing them at meetings and / or on-site.
  • Assisting the regions by taking charge of specified work streams and as demand requires.
  • Provide technical expertise and experience to assist in finding solutions to engineering issues using a working knowledge of engineering, heritage, and environmental conservation.
  • Advise and adhere to all applicable statutory obligations ensuring compliance with Trusts procedures, external regulations, and legal compliance. This includes the implementation of active monitoring and early warning notification and contributing to setting and responding to emergency procedures.
  • Provide day to day technical support and guidance in your area of responsibility to assist in the resolution of M&E related problems, attending regional stakeholder meetings and liaising on all M&E matters.
  • Responsible for asset data quality and other operational information systems.
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Undertake risk assessments, Permit to Work authorisation, report incidents, accidents and near misses.
  • Active participation in our M&E on call rota.
  • Working with and supporting Trust engineering contractors to complete work safely and on-time and providing expert mechanical and electrical advice to project engineers and managers on M&E assets.
  • Supporting internal and external enquiries associated with the assets. Responding as appropriate by reference to relevant information sources.
  • Jointly Assist and develop a source of volunteers and assist to develop our Apprentices.

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example. Take responsibility for the safety of colleagues, volunteers, themselves and customers. Comply with Canal & River Trust's Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Investigate and report incidents, accidents and near misses. Ensure safe use of appropriate equipment, prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements ensuring contents are understood and acted upon.
  • To be aware of your own responsibilities regarding safeguarding and to support our commitment to providing safe environments and working practises that promote and protect the safety and welfare of children, young people and adults at risk at all times.

About you

Technical:

  • Desirable to hold professional qualification, such as a Degree or HND, or equivalent experience in a relevant technical discipline - Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Applicants with in-depth Industry experience and who can demonstrate their knowledge will be considered on an equal basis.
  • Desirable to be working towards Chartered or Incorporated Electrical Engineer, with full membership of relevant professional body at an appropriate level, e.g., IET.
  • Established experience of inspecting / delivering M&E engineering activities.
  • Proven experience in assessing M&E infrastructure risk. Knowledge of PUWER, LOLER, machinery safety legislation and risk assessment processes.
  • Good understanding of National Health and Safety requirements.

General:

  • Able to support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate.
  • Understanding of budgets and ability to prioritise expenditure across the regions in order to reduce risk and prolong asset life at the lowest cost.
  • Able to work as a Team across regions to provide similar standard and share knowledge.
  • Able to provide a good standard of written communication and proven ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
  • Awareness of the Trust 's governance, financial controls, and systems of compliance, beneficial.
  • Encouraging team to and displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
