The role

As Chemify continues to automate all of chemistry, the Senior Mechatronics Engineer will join an effective product development team focused on quickly building, iterating on, and deploying modern automated systems, robotic platforms, tools, and processes to change the world of Chemistry through automation! The mechatronics engineer will build upon existing platforms and tools by bringing experience and know-how in advanced robotics, controls, and commercial grade electronics development to take on a key technical role at the company: guiding design, integration, and decision-making towards the rapid realization of exceptional and custom hardware solutions powering Chemify factories in Glasgow Scotland and across the world. The successful candidate will rely on their track-record in successfully designing, building, testing, and launching high-quality electronic and mechatronic components or systems with significant impact in a commercial organization. To facilitate your role, Chemify boasts an industry-leading array of prototype manufacturing equipment, including advanced 3D printing technologies, CNC machining, and metal forming. They will bring intensity to sustain the pace needed to ensure the rapid development of the core technology required for the success of an early stage organization.

The Senior Hardware Engineer will have the opportunity to collaborate very closely with Chemists, Cheminformaticians, software engineers, operations experts, management, and other hardware engineers to quickly design, develop, launch, and maintain complex hardware systems within Chemify's world-class solutions dedicated to Chemistry. The successful candidate will have a track record of impactful hardware development: from single PCBs to functional electro-mechanical assemblies, etc... At this stage of their career, they remain extremely motivated to contribute hands-on and aggressively to the development of a hyper-growth, silicon-valley style start-up by delivering high-quality platforms at a high-pace - in Glasgow, Scotland.

Additionally, the Senior Engineer will have a service mentality to understand the needs of the chemists and the business, and will use it to build high-quality solutions significantly improving short- and long-term performance of the company's laboratory. The ideal candidate will be an established and confident engineer, a smart, enthusiastic, energetic, and ambitious individual excited to contribute to development of the world's best infrastructure for high-throughput chemistry that will eventually handle the world's load of synthesis, at Chemify.

Your main tasks as an electronics/mechatronics engineer will be to contribute to the electronic specification, design, prototyping, testing, service and support of Chemify's automated chemistry platforms. You will be collaborating closely with members from the other teams at Chemify - chemistry, software, and cheminformatics. The role is office/laboratory based and you would be expected to relocate if required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the maturation of existing and developing technologies towards commercial grade solutions elegantly meeting the business, user-experience, and operating needs of a rapidly growing company - in a collaborative and high-octane environment.
  • Take leadership of fast-turnaround mechatronic projects.
  • Completion of electronics specification, design, manufacturing and validation.
  • Development of prototype electronics using bespoke PCB design or development boards as necessary.
  • Work with the Hardware Systems Architect to ensure consistent engineering practices and technologies are applied across all Chemify products.
  • Improve company efficiency in short timelines to maximize the value created by existing and future technology products in a human-centric system.
  • Introduce new processes and operational functions across the organization by integrating all components into highly efficient workflows decreasing costs, increasing quality, improving turn-around-time, and maximize the overall throughput of the organization.
  • Work with Software Engineering, Quality, Laboratory Operations, and Research Chemistry to optimize the day-to-day workflows of the laboratory and company in general to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and scalability in the company's ability to deliver on multiple complex chemical synthesis campaigns in parallel, leveraging the company's core platform components.
  • Participate in other tasks across the company to ensure Chemify's ultimate success.

Requirements

  • BEng Hons or equivalent in electronic engineering, mechatronics, or equivalent.
  • Over 6 years of experience in design, development, testing, and launch of electronics and mechatronics solutions in highly collaborative and cross-functional environments.
  • Experience with electrical wiring and harness design
  • A proven track record of building successful electronic and mechatronic solutions to technical problems - trailblazing design and technology as needed.
  • Proficient in PCB design using Altium Designer or equivalent software
  • Experience using Solidworks for design of mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Strong understanding of core electronic engineering principles such as circuit design, digital and analogue electronics, control systems
  • Experience designing integrated electro-mechanical systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly with external partners to achieve rapid and cost-effective delivery of third-party materials and components
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

Desired skills & attributes

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer
  • Embedded software programming (C/C++) experience.
  • Exposure to testing/scripting with Python
  • Experience in platform technology companies focused on scientific challenges a plus
  • Experience with Chemistry a plus
