We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Asset Management team in the Solihull and Warwickshire area of the West Midlands region.

An Engineer will work as part of the supportive West Midlands asset management team but also be given an area of the waterway network which will give you hands-on experience in managing our unique historic infrastructure. You will be responsible for inspecting and assessing the condition of our assets, prioritising repair and renewal works, and supporting the operations team on minor and reactive repairs. You will act as client throughout the project lifecycle and providing technical support to other Trust departments.

As a Senior Engineer you provide line management, support and/or mentoring to a team of Engineers and Inspectors. You will be tasked with strategic asset management roles and have a greater influence on the management of our critical assets. Working with wider Trust departments to improve the stakeholder engagement internally and externally.

Location & coverage

Administratively based from our West Midlands hub, this vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. It is therefore essential that applicants are able and willing to work effectively from home.

This role will involve regular travel to and along the canals and river navigations of the network in the Solihull and Warwickshire area and occasionally you may also be required to work nationally too.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

We're very proud to be the custodians of one of the largest collections of industrial heritage, covering 2,000 miles of the UK's canals and rivers and over 8,500 different structures, many of them Listed. The majority of our canals, navigable rivers and reservoirs are over 200 years old, and they still work as they were designed to. This is quite remarkable and reflects the innovation and skill of the original engineers and the continuing dedication and expertise of our team today.

The role of the Senior Engineer is varied and interesting, with the focus on maintaining the Trust's assets through their entire life cycle to enable visitors to safely enjoy our canals and rivers and safeguard them for future generations. As Senior Engineer you play a key part in inspecting and assessing the condition of our assets, prioritising repair and renewal works, and acting in a Client role for repair works.

As a Senior Engineer working in the West Midlands, you will be part of a team of engineers, technicians and inspectors who play a critically important role in providing asset management expertise for the Trust and maintaining, conserving, renewing and protecting engineering infrastructure and assets (including reservoirs). You will make decisions on asset investment priorities which are driven by a risk-based approach, based on your knowledge of our assets, and support the operations team on minor and reactive repairs.

You will be working with stakeholders both internally and externally to understand the engineering problems and advising on the risks which affect the waterways and our customers and users. In your role you will make a vital contribution to ensure that our customers can enjoy the Trust's canals, rivers and reservoirs.

Key accountabilities:

• Asset management responsibility for a geographical area of canals, river navigations and reservoirs.
• Responsible for undertaking scheduled asset inspections, ensuring that they are completed on time and to a high quality.
• Investigate and prioritise defects on a risk based approach.
• Define and support the maintenance, repair and renewal works for delivery by the Trust 's teams and contractors, taking account of all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.
• Contribute technical advice during the feasibility, design, construction and commissioning phases for projects to our internal delivery teams (Customer Operations & Direct Services), framework contractors and volunteers.
• Management of a small team of asset inspectors who monitor changes to the infrastructure.
• Support internal and external enquiries associated with the assets. Respond as appropriate by reference to relevant information sources.
• Where required, provide suitable temporary works designs to support local minor maintenance teams.
• Build relationships with local representatives of partnerships, regulators, and stakeholders to protect, maintain, and continually improve levels of service and improve data held by the Trust.
• Where appropriate actively participate in the Trust's "Stand-by" and" Call-out rotas".

About you

This role is based with our Asset Management team , and we are looking for someone with engineering experience, has good knowledge and confidence in identifying engineering problems and identifying solutions to those problems. Our successful applicant may previously have worked in roles including asset inspection for similar organisations/consultants and have knowledge of Engineering Design Principals and Works Planning / Prioritisation.

Technical:

• Degree or HND in Civil Engineering.
• Incorporated (IEng) status - or actively working towards - with the Institution of Civil Engineers (or similar). Advantageous .
• Proven experience of inspecting engineering activities.
• Proven experience in assessing infrastructure risk, for example: bridges, slopes, assets, railways, highways, water.
• Proven experience of safety in engineering, including CDM.
• Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
• Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, preferably in the water environment, beneficial.

General:

• Demonstrable experience in cross-functional working delivering performance across range of functions.
• Must hold a current valid driving licence - company car allowance will be provided.
• Proficient in the use of a personal computer and business applications software e.g. MS Office.
• Able to negotiate with internal and external contacts.
• Confirmation of right to work in the UK.
• Able to provide a good standard of written communication and proven ability to present technical data.
