We love trees! They help the canals in even the most urban areas become a haven for wildlife. They provide interest and colour for our communities.
Trees in the wrong places however cause us all sorts of problems. A Buddleia, the butterfly bush is welcome when growing in the verges next to the towpath, but when this tenacious plant propagates itself in the mortar of a 250-year-old canal wall then sadly, it has to go.
We need two keen volunteers who will walk stretches of our waterways identifying, recording, and removing these shoots, saplings and small trees using hand tools that we will supply.
Volunteers for this role must be over 18 years of age and reasonably physically fit due to the nature of the role, and be able to work as a pair for safety reasons.
Why we want you
As a Waterway Ranger you'll be the face, eyes and ears of the Trust. Having a regular friendly presence on the towpath means a lot for visitors and supporters and goes a long way to us caring for and sustaining our fantastic network for future generations. we need your support to be there for our customers. You'll be assisting our visitor experience at some of our most beautiful sites, as well as possibly working in our more remote and niche environments, learning more about our waterways. Your support to help maintain our network will help us achieve our goal to keep canals alive.
