Projects Associate

"They are good to deal with and go above and beyond." - Chambers & Partners

We have an exciting new opportunity for an Associate to join our Projects team in our London or Bristol office. From a very well regarded team, you will be involved in a variety of projects and transactions - but with a particular focus on the renewable energy sector. You will be given early responsibility for building client relationships and business development whilst working in a collaborative and supportive team environment.

The practice

Our Projects team offers clients high-level expertise across the full project lifecycle from initial project set-up/acquisition, through project development, financing, operations and exit. We have been at the forefront of many of the recent market developments and have an exciting pipeline of work and opportunities we are developing (which includes solar, wind, storage, biomass and energy-from-waste, green hydrogen and electric vehicle charging).

Our offering is broad and our extensive practice represents investors, developers and lenders across a range of sectors in the UK and internationally.

Energy is a specialist area that requires a combination of industry and market knowledge together with legal and risk management expertise. Our international team has a reputation for successfully delivering first-class support in all segments of the energy and infrastructure markets. Associates in the Projects team can therefore expect an interesting range of work with exposure to a range of different technologies, markets, structures and clients.

Within the Energy sector we are widely acknowledged as the leading adviser on the move to a decentralised and decarbonised energy industry and adoption of innovative energy solutions and have adopted decarbonisation as one of the themes underpinning the firm's Transformational strategy.

In addition to energy, our Projects team is also active in the infrastructure sector and has particular expertise in education, universities, healthcare, rail, roads, airports and related transport infrastructure. Outside of the UK, we have market-leading energy and infrastructure specialists in all key European hubs.

The team

The Projects team is split between Bristol and London with 9 Partners; 1 Legal Director, 5 Associate Directors; 4 Senior Associates; 9 Associates, 6 Trainee Solicitors and 1 Solicitor Apprentice. You will have the opportunity to work directly with a number of Partners in the team.

The work

Recent work completed by the firm within the Energy sector includes:

  • Advising Statera on the £300 million development and financing of a 300MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project and a 270MW gas peaker plant, both co-located in Thurrock, Essex.;
  • Supporting HyCap on its series A investment in YamnaCo - an early-stage company which is looking to invest in and develop gigawatt-scale green hydrogen and ammonia projects in the Middle East, Africa and globally, with a view to potentially becoming a competitor to Big Oil.
  • Advising the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership on the development of the Standardised Technology Demonstration Agreement (STDA) to facilitate the demonstration of offshore wind innovation products and solutions.

Recent work undertaken by our wider Projects team includes:

  • We continue to act for EE on the £1.2 billion, ground-breaking Home Office Emergency Services Network Project Contract project to provide a next generation communication system for the three emergency services (police, fire and rescue, and ambulance) and other public safety users.
  • We are acting for a number of investors on construction and/or commercial disputes affecting UK social infrastructure PFI projects.
  • We are acting for the private sector partner in relation to the successful bid for the University of Birmingham's student residences procurement for the PPP design, build, finance and operation of circa 1,400 new student beds at the Pritchatts Park campus.
  • We are acting for Bristol University in relation to the development of its new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus & which will help stimulate significant regeneration in the heart of Bristol.
  • We are advising leading UK infrastructure manager and developer, Equitix, on its joint venture accommodation development projects with the University of London and Essex University.

Technical skills and experience

We are interested in hearing from candidates with experience across of energy projects and transactions and who have a keen interest in renewables. Due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team we are ideally looking to appoint an Associate, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.

Your career development

Like all our lawyers, you will benefit from our multi-award winning career development programme. At each stage of your career this provides you with:

  • clear expectations of your role and what it takes to progress;
  • high quality clients and work, with early responsibility and client exposure;
  • thorough assessment and individual feedback from a range of experienced colleagues;
  • robust technical training with early skills based development, increasingly tailored to you; and
  • reward for your contribution, progression and potential, rather than PQE or tenure.
