What we're looking for in a nutshell:
We're keen to see applications from candidates who are ACA and/or CTA qualified , with substantial experience in tax , ideally within an in-house setting. However, we're also open to those making a first move in-house from a practice background.
The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded understanding of UK corporation tax , with hands-on experience in both compliance and advisory roles . While property and VAT expertise would be a plus, it's not essential. Communication skills and a collaborative approach are key, alongside proficiency in Microsoft programs, including Excel and PowerPoint.

Job purpose:
You'll be part of the in-house Tax team covering Corporation Tax, VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme. The Tax team delivers tax support across the business, working with stakeholders at all levels. We are part of the wider Finance team, which is made up of innovative finance professionals; you'll work with Heads of, Finance Directors and other high calibre accountants, as well as business partnering to ensure compliance and maximisation of tax opportunities across the business.
You'll be based at our Union office in Manchester opposite the town hall, working in a team of three which includes a Head of Tax and a Group Tax Assistant Manager.
Flexibility : This role is advertised as a full time position, however we are open to flexible working patterns if you have commitments outside of work, for example a four day working week. If you'd like to be considered on a four day week, then please highlight this in your application form. (Please note that in a 4 day week case, the salary will be pro rata).
What you'll be doing:
Tax Accounting
- Assist with the preparation of detailed current and deferred tax calculations on an annual basis for the purposes of the consolidated group statutory accounts and the UK statutory accounts under FRS 102
Forecasting
- Assist with the preparation of corporation tax forecasts for business planning purposes across our 5 year plan, including payments on account.
Corporation Tax Compliance
- Assist with the corporation tax computation preparation and review for all group companies (c. 80 entities) on an annual basis.
- Preparation of a detailed review of all capital expenditure to ensure tax relief via capital allowances is maximised (see below re Capital Allowances)
- Assist with the preparation of all supporting tax return working papers including corporate interest restriction, transfer pricing, chargeable gains, capital allowances and lease surrender part disposal calculations.
Capital Allowances
- Lead on the continual process improvement work undertaken to ensure opportunities for capital allowance claims are maximised across the business.
- Review annual capital expenditure and work with the project managers to identify claims on an annual basis.
- Manage the external capital allowance advisors where reviews of larger scale projects are outsourced including the provision of all necessary information.
VAT
- Review of the VAT returns for all entities across the business (note that there are a mixture of group and individual registrations).
- Support the Group Tax Assistant Manager with the management of VAT payments to ensure all payments are made on time.
- Responsible for the preparation of and ongoing management of options to tax and VAT registrations.
- Support the Group Tax Assistant Manager with HMRC compliance checks and enquiries to ensure all queries are dealt with quickly and efficiently.
Tax Advisory
- Provide tax support across the business for all ad hoc tax queries.
- Provide input on opportunities to maximise tax relief available.
- Support the Head of Tax with new tax legislation and initiatives.
