Water safety is an important part of a child's education and delivering our Water Safety messages to as many children as possible is a priority for the Canal & River Trust. Can you help us deliver our water safety programme in schools across Wigan?
Due to the success of our programme in Wigan we're looking for more volunteers to join our existing team of volunteers to ensure that we can continue to reach as many children as possible with our important water safety messages.
Although volunteering will be very flexible, you’ll need to be able to give around half a day a week for delivery of assemblies. The role involves travelling across Wigan to visit pupils in school time - there is less to do during school holidays.
Our water safety education programme includes story time sessions for under 5s, assemblies for 5-11 year olds and classroom workshops for 11-14 year olds.
We're looking for volunteers who are good organisers and confident communicators with the ability to speak in front of large groups of children.
We give you full training and provide resources for delivering our water safety education programme, with a number of training days and team meetings. You will have the support of a Learning & Skills Coordinator as well as the other volunteers in your team. We reimburse you for all travel costs.
This role involves regulated activity with children, as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken and references will be sought. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to volunteering with us.
Why we want you
Being an Education Volunteer is a rewarding experience. The role is full of variety, flexibility and a lot of fun! We inspire children and young people about our canals and rivers, using the waterways as a tool to build life skills, raise aspirations and connect children with the great outdoors.
You might be doing one of the following things:
Leading school and group trips in the great outdoors.
Delivering life saving water safety education to children.
Delivering hands-on workshops to Girlguiding and Scouting groups - And much more!
Leading Water Safety Assemblies
Leading STEM acitivities
You will need to be able to volunteer flexibly to respond to group requests, committing to 3 or 4 activities a month (usually during school hours and term-time).
