Role Overview: As a Design Director at GHD (Internal title: Discipline Design Lead), you will lead our Design function, ensuring the delivery of top-notch design services to our business groups. Your role will focus on improving efficiency, driving standardization, fostering innovation, and enhancing automation within the discipline.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership:

• Maintain oversight of Design Team performance and resource changes, effectively communicating these to key stakeholders.
• Monitor industry trends and develop innovative solutions to support our winning projects.
• Anticipate resource availability within the Discipline and proactively assess its impact on projects and EDO (Engineering Design Organisation) delivery.
• Align hiring plans with future pipelines and skill requirements, applying rigorous selection processes.
• Assign staff to programs based on their capabilities, career aspirations, and program needs.
• Cultivate strong relationships with internal clients and CRM's within the Business Groups to ensure exceptional service delivery.
• Monitor and enforce compliance with GHD systems and processes.
• Effectively manage project-related risks within the Business Group, addressing them with the appropriate level of urgency.
• Ensure consistent achievement of utilization and quality metrics within the Discipline Team.
• Operate knowledge management, processes, and systems efficiently within the Discipline.
• Drive financial performance by achieving financial metrics within your discipline.

People Leadership:

• Coach Team Leaders to proactively enhance the performance, motivation, and engagement of their teams.
• Ensure that those performing PM duties within the EDO (Engineering Design Organisation) possess the necessary skills and meet expectations.
• Manage team capability in line with the EDO (Engineering Design Organisation) competency management process and professional body requirements.
• Utilize succession planning and talent data to develop pipelines and nurture talent.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, high standards, and service excellence.

Delivery:

• Act as the Design Lead for high-profile, complex, multiple-discipline, or large moderately complex projects, overseeing all project phases.
• Lead and oversee the work of a design team to achieve project milestones and objectives, ensuring strict compliance.
• Communicate and delegate assignments, setting internal deadlines for projects to guarantee timely completion.
• Ensure the implementation and adherence to company standards within your Group.

Skills & Experience:

• Proven experience in successfully leading discipline teams across multiple industry sectors.
• Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills to ensure optimal outcomes for clients, stakeholders, and team members.
• Demonstrated operational expertise and the ability to coach and mentor others.
• Proven track record of successful collaboration with diverse stakeholder groups.
• Experience in embedding standardized ways of working and driving adoption within teams.
• Demonstrated success in leading high-performing and highly engaged teams.
