We are delivering a substantial increase in investment on our waterway infrastructure to improve its resilience, given the growing impact of climate change, which demands that we make improvements in our approach and how we organise the development, planning and delivery of our work. We are expanding our new Programme Management Office (PMO) to improve the standards of programme delivery and provide governance, oversight and assurance around the delivery of our expanded work programme in line with industry best practice.

About the role

You will form part of our Programme Management Office (PMO) team in our Infrastructure and Programmes Directorate who programme manage an annual c£95m of investment across the Trust's broad range of assets. This equates to c.80 major projects and c.700 minor projects per annum. The PMO is uniquely placed to give an overarching view of all the projects and programmes that are being delivered with I&P.

The role will be working principally within the Programme Controls & Planning teams to manage, report and deliver change to the agreed programme whilst ensuring we remain compliant with process and governance.

You'll also have exposure across all the PMO specialities, including our Cost Intelligence, Risk Management, Programme Planning and Performance & Assurance teams.

  • Provide reporting support to the Programme controls team as part of the monthly cycle and ensuring reporting deadlines are met
  • Provide compliance data and insight for where this has not been met
  • Support the reporting, development and refinement of programme level KPIs
  • Support the Performance & Assurance team in reviewing policy and guidance and ensure this is kept up to date in line with review cycles
  • Supporting with Post Project Appraisals process and the implementation of best practise for project delivery
  • Support the Risk Manager in reviewing, updating and mitigating project and programme risks
  • Support the Cost Intelligence team with cost estimating and final accounting analysis
  • Support internal enquiries associated with the programme
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust's Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents and near misses
  • Displaying the Trust values and behaviours always

As a Trust apprentice, you will complete your apprenticeship training both on and off-the-job, including regular attendance at our chosen training provider. All college related travel costs are paid for by the Trust.

Whilst on-the-job, you will work with supportive colleagues to get the best out of your apprenticeship experience.

What skills and abilities do I need to have?

We are looking for someone who is inquisitive, enjoys working with data and is a keen problem solver. An eye for detail and a good grasp of understanding processes and how they fit into the big picture would be beneficial

What qualifications do I need to have?

Ideally grade A-C or grade 9-4 in Maths, English and Science GCSE (or equivalent) already achieved or on target to achieve.

What qualifications or experience would potentially help me more?

An interest or connection to finance, financial management, risk management, programme planning, reporting or data and data insight.

A grasp of data, data modelling and Power BI gathered through work experience of volunteering would be beneficial but is not essential.
