Dorchester Youth & Community Centre is looking to recruit an experienced Youth Work Manager to inspire a dynamic team of youth workers , with solid, hands-on experience in delivering high quality, open access youth work, and a track record of successfully managing targeted projects.

The charitable trust is committed to maintaining the delivery of the current range of youth work and youth club sessions and on continuous improvement and adaptation to match the changing needs of young people.

If you are the ideal person we are seeking, you have the ability to oversee the planning, delivery and evaluation of outcomes-focused youth work. You possess a knowledge and understanding of best practices and policies and the regulatory framework relating to youthwork. You understand the paramount importance of safeguarding. You have the ability to build and maintain positive, supportive working relationships with young people. You have the ability to supervise, manage and motivate a team of youth workers and volunteers. You understand the pressures and challenges young people in Dorchester and surrounding villages currently face. You are politically aware and understand youth sub-culture including current social media trends. You have good written communication skills and the ability to write accurate and succinct written reports and persuasive bids for funding. Ideally you have a degree in Youth Work, Social Work, Community Development, or a related field, or a JNC Recognised Youth Work Qualification at Level 4 and above. However we are willing to consider applicants who have a qualification in a related field (e.g. education) and can demonstrate transferable skills and have experience of working with young people.

The main duties will be:

  • manage a team of part time and volunteer Youth Workers, delivering the youth club sessions, programmes for NEET young people, Outreach work, and the Piddlehinton camp project.
  • act as Lead Youth Work professional including on safeguarding matters, ensuring up to date and robust safeguarding policies are in place and that staff and volunteers adhere to them
  • ensure there is a robust approach to risk management and Health and Safety
  • develop plans for projects and Centre-funded activities, manage and track budgets, produce accurate reports, ensuring projects are properly documented and delivered within budget
  • promote the Centre to young people in the town and develop the youth programmes we offer further.
  • maintain strong relationships with Dorset Council and with other youth organisations and stakeholders in the town, to maximise the effectiveness of our offering.
  • assist the Trustees to fundraise and make grant applications.

The hours are 20 hours per week. The salary is £31k pro rata. Leave entitlement will be 4 weeks plus bank holidays per year pro rata. There is an auto-enrolment pension scheme. A certain amount of flexibility is required and the post holder will be expected to work occasional evenings and weekends. There will also be evening meetings of the management committee that you will be expected to attend, approximately one per quarter.

We aim to provide a truly inclusive, fun and safe place where young people can spend time with their friends, participate in fun activities and informal education. The building has enormous potential. Facilities include: large lounge area where young people can chill out, pool table and table football tables, bar, fully equipped kitchen, disco area with DJ booth, video projection equipment, indoor sports area, quiet room, music studio, garden, allotment area, and nearby playing fields.

The Youth Work Manager will have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping new developments.
