Lead the Yard. Shape the Team. Roll Up Your Sleeves.
Royston Full Time £40,000 - £45,000
We're helping a small, specialist timber merchant with a big heart and a loyal client base. They supply premium materials to traditional builders, restorers, and eco-conscious architects across the UK. It's a business where people genuinely care - about quality, craft, and each other.
Now, they're looking for a Yard Manager who can bring order, energy, and leadership to the busy site - while never being afraid to jump in and get stuck alongside the team.
The Role
This isn't just about managing a yard - it's about leading people, creating structure, and keeping things moving smoothly in a hands-on environment. You'll play a key role in shaping daily operations and team culture while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.
What you'll be doing:
- Leading a small team in the yard - clearly, fairly, and with respect
- Managing stock movement, machine maintenance, vehicles, and daily workflow
- Making sure the yard is safe, efficient, and well-organised
- Getting hands-on when needed - you're as comfortable operating a machine as you are running a meeting
- Supporting operational improvements and better ways of working
Requirements
- A natural team leader who leads by example
- Experience in timber, building materials, construction, or manufacturing
- Someone calm under pressure, practical, and good with people
- Hands-on, sleeves-rolled-up mindset - no clipboard managers here
- Comfortable juggling short-term needs with long-term improvements
- Someone commercially aware with a strong work ethic and people focus
What you'll get:
- A key role in a small business where your impact is real and visible
- A respectful, close-knit team that takes pride in what they do
- £40,000-£45,000 depending on experience
- Freedom to shape how the yard is run and contribute to how the business grows
