Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in 7 South Day Surgery and the Surgical Assessment Area for a Ward Manager.

Day Surgery is an integral part of the Trust's Elective Recovery Programme leading to opportunities to lead and develop in a variety of ways with the support of a Matron and a well developed and engaged team.

The post will incorporate the senior leadership role dimensions of expert clinical practice, education, leadership, management, and research. The successful post holder will be a highly skilled member of the nursing team responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of a high standard of care to patients and their families, according to our world class values alongside working on the Trust vision to reduce waiting times for elective surgical patients.

Main duties of the job

The Day Surgery and Surgical Assessment unit will admit and care for the majority of patients on an elective surgical pathway with a wide variety of surgical pathways and specialities. The Ward Manager will work closely with the Matron, surgical teams, anaesthetic colleagues and operational teams to plan and a deliver a first class clinical service. Including
• To take overall responsibility for ensuring safe staffing levels and the monitoring of planned versus actual staffing levels.
• To contribute to the facilitation of the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care pathways for patients attending the unit.
• To focus on patient and colleague feedback to change and drive forward service improvements using the quality improvement methodology where appropriate.
• Attend senior meetings regarding the service, acting up and supporting the Matron as required.

  • Contribute to the ongoing training and educational development within the unit, ensuring mandatory training and appraisal requirements are met.
  • Act as a visible role model and expert practitioner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1.1 Always maintain professional behaviour and promote a positive image of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust at all times, in line with World Class Care values.

1.2 Demonstrate clinical expertise in practice.

1.3 Undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility.

1.4 Actively participate in the development of relevant evidence based clinical guidelines/policies relating to speciality.

1.5 Provide professional, clinical, and managerial leadership to nursing and associated staff, and ensure the provision of a high quality, responsive nursing service.

1.6 Collaborate on all aspects of quality management related to the nursing and clinical area.

1.7 Assist in the evaluation of the service and patient care, including monitoring of patient experience.

1.8 Lead the implementation of improvements in the service within own areas of responsibility in line with local and national agenda and patient feedback.

1.9 To have a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and knowledgeable with respect to safeguarding triggers and risks.

1.10 To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical and professional activities.

1.11 To recognise the limits of own clinical knowledge and skills and to seek medical support whenever needed to provide safe, effective, and timely patient care.

1.12 To establish effective working relations with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to promote good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care

1.13 To contribute to the investigation of complaints and untoward incidents and ensure recommendations and related education/training programmes/action plans are implemented.

1.14 To ensure accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate written and electronic documentation.

1.15 Collect data and provide essential information in a timely and accurate manner when requested for e.g., audits or monitoring CQC standards

1.16 Maintain awareness of relevant research, evaluations and audit, and act on this information in collaboration with colleagues to continually develop the service including leading on and supporting quality improvement projects

1.17 Measure patient acuity and/or dependency to inform evidence-based decision making on staffing and workforce.

1.18 Monitor and record planned vs actual staffing levels and escalate issues when necessary.

1.19 Supervise junior and unqualified staff, in all aspects of care and within the sphere of competency

1.20 Ensure that staff have the knowledge, skills, and resources to carry out care delegated to them.

1.21 Alongside the matron be responsible for carrying out risk assessments according to the Clinical Governance/Clinical Risk Strategies

1.22 Be responsible for ensuring effective mechanisms are in place so that all clinical and non-clinical incidents, including serious incidents are properly reported, investigated and changes made to avoid recurrence.

1.23 Work with the bed managers and operational managers, ensuring safe and optimal use of resources.

1.24 Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and Scope for Expanded Practices for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors.
