Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Professional Leadership/Management
• Ensure the service continually improves to meet the needs of patients.
• Develop nursing staff to improve patient care by enhancing assessment and technical skills, and actively promoting advanced clinical skills and competencies.
• Provide leadership that promotes effective discharge planning that incorporates the patient & carers view.
• Provide expert advice on all aspects of patient care, through others where appropriate.
• Monitor standards of cleanliness and the patient environment within the clinical area.
• Ensure health and safety of staff and patients by complying with appropriate standards. These include radiological protection, decontamination, COSHH, Medical Devices, Infection Control and the safe administration of medicines standards.
• Ensure staffing rotas incorporate effective use of resources, managing within financial envelope.
• To achieve length of stay reductions through implementation of enhanced recovery programmes, effective discharge planning and supporting the Medical teams to utilise other resources such as Virtual Ward and Ambulatory Emergency Care for the ongoing treatment of patients.
• Deputise for the Modern Matron in their absence.

Clinical Practice
• Have excellent knowledge in recognising and caring for acutely unwell patients.
• Develop and maintain competence in agreed basic and advanced clinical skills
• To be competent to manage an emergency situation
• Have excellent skills and knowledge to care for patients in acute respiratory failure.
• Clinical duties are expected to be carried out for 40% of the working week
• Be an effective role model for junior staff including students
• Work with Specialist Nurses to develop & maintain competencies in the clinical area
• Provide effective communication channels with senior & junior staff
• Work with Modern Matron to implement, maintain & monitor Essence of Care
• Ensure Care Pathways are followed
• To be competent in delivering End of life care when required

Clinical Governance
• Lead the development of evidence-based multi-professional & inter-agency practice guidelines that support the implementation of good practice
• Work with the Matron to establish effective audit processes to monitor adherence to these guidelines and take appropriate action to influence/change practice where necessary
• Ensure annual appraisal review for all staff directly line-managed and identify individual development plans for each member of staff
• Ensure Clinical Supervision is provided for all nursing staff.
• Lead on Risk Management & incident reporting and foster a culture of "no-blame"
• Obtain regular patient & public feedback to ensure standards are continuously monitored.
• To ensure mandatory and statutory training are carried out as per Trust policies.
• To ensure compliance with infection control guidelines and audits

Communication
• Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward.
• Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.
• Maintain effective, appropriate communication and dissemination of information to all others including relatives, significant others and colleagues.
• Welcome patients and their families to the ward and treat them holistically and as individuals.
• Have due regard for the customs, values and beliefs of all including patients including those who require End of life care.
• Work with the outside service providers and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective bed utilisation and safe patient discharge planning.
• Maintain and develop effective communication between the patients, families and the MDT.
• Show an awareness of ethical dilemmas and encourage discussion amongst the MDT.
• To investigate concerns and complaints as they arise, including speaking to patients and/or relatives

Person specification

Course

Essential criteria

  • Completed course
  • Registered Nurse (adult)
  • A clinical expert either through formal qualification (diploma/degree) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to the area.
  • Previous experience in an Acute Admission Unit
  • Demonstrable management skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and its application
  • Demonstrable leadership skills

Desirable criteria

  • Critical Care Course
  • Nursing Degree
  • Relevant post registration qualification in acute care
  • Research skills
  • Project management
