1. To manage the care pathway for young people at The Darwin Centre from referral to discharge. To include ensuring effective communication with families, referrers and external agencies, the management of commissioning arrangements, bed management and case load management for the team.

2. To have overall management responsibility for the delivery of care within the unit, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

3. To lead a team of clinical staff in the delivery of high-quality evidence-based practice, ensuring that regular supervision, appraisal and mandatory training takes place.

4. To ensure that all children and families have high quality comprehensive and collaborative care plans that include evidence-based assessments and interventions and address risks.

5. To ensure the programme of assessment and therapeutic activities is maintained and developed to a high standard, is evidenced based and in line with NICE guidelines, QNIC and CQC standards.

6. To oversee and support the team's management of clinical risk and to offer advice and guidance when necessary.

7. Support the clinical team to create accurate documents of their observations and assessments to a standard that could inform child protection procedures. To ensure that for each child a discharge report is created that provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment

8. To ensure that systems that operate for staff support and supervision are maintained.

9. To be accountable for own professional practice and to maintain standards described in own profession's code of conduct, legislation, government guidelines, trust policies and research.

10. To ensure that all policies and procedures are easily accessible to staff, are current and that unit policies are reviewed regularly

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Professional qualification in Nursing
  • Current registration with the NMC
  • Post-graduate qualification or significant experience related to child, adolescent or family mental health.

Desirable criteria

  • Management qualification
  • Training in supervision
  • Physical intervention training

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in an intensive service with children and/or families
  • Good understanding and experience in delivering clinical and management supervision
  • Experience and understanding of performance management
  • Experience, knowledge and training in management and leadership
  • Comprehensive understanding of the MHA, children's Act and safeguarding

Desirable criteria

  • Experience, knowledge and training in policy and service development
  • Understanding of and evidence of implementing least restrictive practice

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to organise, lead and motivate others from a range of disciplines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to produce accurate coherent reports that maybe used in child protection proceedings
  • Ability to remain calm and rational in difficult, challenging and distressing circumstances
  • Ability to manage capability and disciplinary issues within the staff team effectively
  • Ability and vision in developing personal and professional practice of self and others in relation to unit needs and government and trust policy

Desirable criteria

  • Willingness and enthusiasm to get involved in physical activities with children in order to provide a role model for parents e.g. swimming, football, kite flying

Knowledge & Understanding

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of implementing MHA in practice
  • An excellent working knowledge of current legislation related to this area including the Children Act 1989, and the Human Rights Act
  • Knowledge and/or experience of working with child protection concerns and procedures
  • An understanding of team and organisational dynamics

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of child development and developmental disorders
