Job Description

Marie Curie is looking for compassionate, everyday people to join our Companion Team at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital to support people with a terminal illness.

What does a Companion Volunteer do?

It's simple, really - you'll be there for someone.

You might visit someone and share stories, connect through hobbies/interests, chat about life, update them regarding local or wider activities. Sometimes just a conversation with a cup of tea/coffee in hand provides a steady presence.

What you will do in this volunteer opportunity

What you'll be part of:

  • Offering emotional comfort and conversation to different patients in the hospital
  • Help someone express what matters most to them
  • Share helpful information about our Companion Service
  • Point them to local resources and services
  • Support family members or carers, before and after bereavement.
  • Promote the Companion service to others so they are aware of the service that can be offered
  • Encourage others to apply for this volunteer opportunity and get involved in making a difference

You'll receive full training and ongoing support from the Marie Curie Team, and you'll be joining a team who care just as much as you do

Please note that Marie Curie will never ask you to do anything you're not comfortable with

You'd be a great fit if you're:

  • Patient and good at listening
  • Non-judgmental of others and friendly
  • Emotionally mature and steady in sensitive moments
  • Able to commit to 3 hours p/week
  • Comfortable using email and filling in a short visit report

In return, you'll gain:

  • A deep sense of purpose and connection
  • Ongoing support, training and guidance
  • A welcoming volunteer community
  • Recognition and appreciation for the time you give
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses each month
  • A chance to make a lasting difference

Ready to take the next step?

Here is what you'll need to do:

  • Firstly, be 18 years or older to apply
  • Secondly, complete an online application form, providing 2 non-family references

Want to know more before applying?

You might want to chat through the opportunity, ask questions, or just get a feel for what it's really like.

Honest information and a warm welcome provided, with no pressure to apply. Please contact Ruth Gilford: 07930 591 939 or ruth.gilford@mariecurie.org.uk
