Main purpose of job:

The British Government's Embassy in Washington has an exciting opportunity for a talented and experienced Human Resources (HR) generalist to join the Americas HR HUB as Regional Human Resources Advisory Manager.

The Americas overseas network is served by a Regional HR Hub in Washington, covering 59 Posts in North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean and British Overseas Territories.

The Regional HR Advisory Manager is responsible for the operational delivery of key HR processes and provides support to locally employed staff working at the British Embassies, High Commissions and other Offices located in the region.

This role provides HR advisory services by exercising sensible judgment and discretion in the interpretation and application of regulations, procedures and policies. The Job Holder will be responsible for the processing and analysis of information and ensuring that HR processes are globally consistent and locally appropriate. The role reports to the Deputy Head of HR and works closely with counterparts from other global regions. It requires leading and managing high-level engagement with senior stakeholders and partners in the Region. The role also holds line management responsibilities for a small team of advisory officers.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, clear communicator, with the ability to lead colleagues to provide a quality service in a fast-paced environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the HR Advisory team.
  • Engage with a wide network of external contacts to understand and keep up to date with workforce regulations and issues across the region.
  • Liaise with colleagues and legal advisers in diplomatic missions to ensure Terms and Conditions of Service and local staff policies are consistent with local labour law and practices.
  • Work with colleagues in the global HR network on projects involving the development of new HR policies. Actively contribute providing feedback and participating in policy discussions.
  • Advise, educate, and lead delivery of HR policies and processes, sharing best practices on performance management, Terms and Conditions of Service, grievance procedures, employee relations, exit interviews, probation, and other HR related topics.
  • Handle complex HR casework by providing expert advice to post management and guide decision making.
  • Oversee and manage continued rollout of Hera management information system and be a first source of support or signpost to appropriate services. Ensure accurate data is entered and maintained.
  • Oversee the HR enquiries operation including monthly reporting and analysis of key trends/issues, ensuring high standards of customer service are in alignment with regionalisation model and defined service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Analyse management information across the Americas HR HUB, delivering analysis reports and conclusions (e.g. headcount and turnover reports).
  • Support and monitor appraisal/review cycles with Line Managers and Senior Management at posts.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Proven HR experience in a generalist role.
  • Experience in a shared service environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Capacity to present solutions in an autonomous and efficient manner.
  • Excellent collaboration and team management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivated and results driven.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Teams and Word and the ability to use these systems to produce reports, charts, graphs etc.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Right to live and work in the US.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Robust working knowledge of Americas employment regulations.
  • SHRM qualified.
  • Fluent spoken and written Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Working Patterns: This role is 40 hours a week across 5 days. The British Embassy and its US Network embraces hybrid working, allowing its staff to typically work from home 2 or 3 times a week. We are an organization that also recognises the critical value of teamwork, and we embrace and endorse collaboration by ensuring that all staff attend the office flexibly yet regularly.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a 'reserve list'. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
