About the role

Join our team as a Utilities Design Manager, responsible for the successful management and delivery of utilities design for the Lower Thames Crossing project for the Power T&D Business.

The Utilities Design Manager will oversee contestable and non-contestable utilities designs, ensuring efficient coordination with main works and ancillary designs, including temporary works.

You will lead design teams, ensuring clarity of scope and efficient delivery on time and within budget, in compliance with project requirements and statutory undertaker standards. The role involves engaging with internal and external stakeholders, managing relationships, and driving innovation to support our initiative to reduce site-based construction activity by 25% by 2025.

What you'll be doing

  • Manage detailed design delivery, ensuring integration and coordination with project stakeholders.
  • Ensure designs consider construction methodology, sequence, temporary works, and environmental and sustainability objectives.
  • Produce and review detailed design deliverables, including models and drawings.
  • Encourage design innovation and value engineering.
  • Communicate design intent efficiently with operations teams, third parties, and clients.
  • Ensure compliance with client, utility company, and Balfour Beatty processes and specifications, as well as external approving bodies.
  • Participate in design review meetings and contribute to design deliverables documents.
  • Track and respond to technical queries and requests for information.
  • Prepare designs in accordance with agreed programmes, resources, and budget constraints.
  • Communicate risks and changes promptly, supporting risk mitigation and change management processes.
  • Foster a collaborative approach to integrated infrastructure projects.
  • Promote a 'Right First Time' culture and operational excellence.

Who we're looking for

  • Multi-disciplinary design management experience within a construction or engineering environment, including contestable utilities delivery processes.
  • Experience coordinating and managing both contestable and non-contestable utilities design on major transport projects.
  • Ability to constructively challenge and optimise design solutions.
  • Proficiency with digital information management systems (e.g., CAD, ProjectWise, GIS).
  • Experience in client and stakeholder management, including liaison with statutory undertakers.
  • Good working knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and designer/Principal Designer duties.
  • Knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991 and National Joint Utilities Group (NJUG) guidance.
  • Commitment to health and safety principles in line with Balfour Beatty's Zero Harm philosophy.
  • Experience delivering design to defined budgets and programmes.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (CSCS, SMSTS desirable).
