Job summary

Will be the clinical and managerial lead for the department. Will take responsibility for the clinical and budgetary management of the department and the provision of nursing care. Take an active part in the organisation and audit process for JAG accreditation. Acts in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession ensuring that service delivered contributes to supporting the principles of clinical governance.

Job responsibilities

  1. Act as the Lead Clinical Nurse to ensure the needs of patients are recognized and met by the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Will also supervise and monitor the care planning process. Will take steps to deal with any difficulty in the care planning process and in implementing planned care.
  2. Act as a point of liaison for multidisciplinary and multi-agency working in order to achieve the best possible outcome for patient care. Will take appropriate action to remedy any deficiencies in service provision from other agencies.
  3. Provide support to junior nursing staff.
  4. Maintain the Trusts aims and objectives within the clinical setting
  5. Accountable and responsible for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines
  6. Administer Intravenous Drugs, IV cannulation and phlebotomy in accordance with Trust policies.
  7. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients and register

any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice.

  1. Actively takes part in the provision of an out of hours emergency upper GI bleed service (working as the assisting nurse to the consultant) and will be working independently as a loan worker in accordance with trust policy.
  1. Actively involved in supporting students during their placement to ensure students educational audit is implemented and reviewed in conjunction with school of nursing and university of Wolverhampton.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain a safe level of nursing staff, taking remedial action, and reporting to
  • Senior Nurse when this cannot be achieved.
  1. To Manage and co-ordinate the selection and recruitment process of staff and to monitor staff sickness and absence in line with Trust policy.
  2. Co-ordinate the Individual Performance Review process of all staff within the department.
  3. Responsible for the maintenance of the departmental budget ensuring that
  • resources are managed efficiently and effectively, in-order to meet the needs of
  • patients and the requirements of the service.
  1. May act as a deputy for Lead Nurse when requested.
  2. Required to participate in the out of hours Hospital Co-ordinator rota.
  3. Ensure a competency-based training programme is provided to all individual staff
  • and that training is maintained at a level that reflects current standards of practice.
  1. To ensure an off duty is roistered which reflects an appropriate skill mix and adequate cover for the activity and demands of the service.
  2. To chair a monthly staff meeting updating nursing staff with departmental and
  • organisational changes, ensuring that the meetings are action planned and distributed to
  • all staff.
  1. To ensure audits i.e., LocSSip and Consent are carried out monthly and that areas of concern are reported to the Lead Nurse.
  2. To arrange and chair a monthly combined Business Meeting and steering group
  • meeting and ensure agenda and minutes are distributed appropriately.
  1. To attend Ward Managers meetings held by Nurse Director.
