Reporting into the CUO, the UPD has day-to-day responsibility for managing a Portfolio team within the Underwriting Management division (UWM) and has responsibility for the management and oversight of the underwriting activities of Asta's managed clients, specifically from a business planning, underwriting strategy and underwriting performance perspective.
Key Responsibilities
The UPD's primary responsibilities are:
- To support the CUO and manage a Portfolio within the Underwriting Performance function within the UWM division, ensuring that Asta and its managed clients operate within a robust underwriting management framework;
- To be the interface between Asta, its managed clients within a Portfolio and Lloyd's from an underwriting performance and strategy perspective;
- To be responsible for the reporting of business plans, underwriting performance and oversight of managed clients within a Portfolio to the relevant boards and committees;
- To continuously review and enhance the underwriting performance oversight capabilities offered to managed clients;
- To manage and develop the individuals within the Underwriting Performance function.
- This role is also a part of Asta's Senior Management Team, supporting the Exec and contributing to the financial success of the business.
- In conjunction with the CUO, manage Asta's UWM division in line with Lloyd's and other regulatory requirements, and within Asta's strategic objectives, in relation to all matters related to business plans, underwriting strategy and performance within Asta UWM.
- Oversee the development and enhancement of Asta's UWM Framework in line with Lloyd's principles, regulatory requirements and market best practice including oversight policies for planning, strategy and performance oversight.
- Be involved with strategic discussions with syndicates and potential changes to business plans, keeping the CUO, wider UWM team and Exec up to date as required.
- In conjunction with the CUO, be responsible for the oversight of the SBF annual planning process including mid-year changes and review of business plans for proposed new clients.
- To be a member of and/or participate in relevant board and committee meetings for Asta and managed clients within a Portfolio, acting as chair of Asta committees where appointed, and report the outcomes to the CUO, Exec and relevant boards.
- Play a leading role in the Lloyd's 'Make it Happen' process and the Asta on-boarding process for new syndicates, particularly focusing on underwriting strategy, performance and business planning.
- Manage key underwriting relationships with Asta clients within a Portfolio and with Lloyd's.
- Manage Asta's Underwriting Performance function within the UWM division, providing support and guidance to the teams including people development and training.

Key technical skills, knowledge and professional qualifications required
- Extensive underwriting management experience recently gained within a senior management role. Experience of managing regulatory relationships e.g. Lloyd's/PRA
- Able to demonstrate proactive participation in boards/committees.
- Sufficient knowledge of all functions and activities of an insurance entity to effectively identify and manage corporate risks and support the CEO in successfully developing the business.
- Broad understanding of a Lloyd's Managing Agency including a good knowledge of the governance, regulatory & financial environment in which it operates.
- Good commercial awareness.
