The main purpose of the role is to support the Underwriting Portfolio Director in managing a portfolio team within the Underwriting Management division (UWM). This important management position within the Underwriting Performance team involves managing and overseeing the performance of a subset of Asta's managed clients as well as leading business planning efforts for a diverse portfolio of clients and managing the underwriting performance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the Underwriting Portfolio Director and manage a portfolio of Lloyd's syndicates ensuring that Asta and its managed clients operate within a robust underwriting management framework in line with Lloyd's principles, regulatory requirements and market best practices for planning, strategy and performance oversight.
  • To provide continuous underwriting performance oversight, working closely with Asta managed clients to understand deviations from plan and establish corrective action where necessary.
  • To be the interface between Asta and its managed clients within a portfolio and Lloyd's from an underwriting performance and planning perspective, providing strategic and portfolio management insights to influence decisions regarding planning and strategy setting.
  • Manage key underwriting relationships between Asta clients within a portfolio and Lloyd's. Assuming responsibilities of the Underwriting Portfolio Director as required.
  • Accountable for the coordination and oversight of the business planning process with close liaison with Asta clients, Lloyd's and other internal functions. Ensuring the timeliness, accuracy and validation of subsequent submissions.
  • To be responsible for the reporting of business plans, underwriting performance and oversight of Asta clients, working with the MI and Analytics function to enhance underwriting reporting and MI.
  • Oversee the preparation of underwriting regulatory returns for Lloyd's, liaise with clients to provide feedback, and ensure accurate and relevant data is delivered within the established deadlines.
  • Participate in relevant board and committee meetings for Asta and managed clients within a portfolio, report the outcomes to the Underwriting Portfolio Director and CUO as required.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in underwriting performance for company projects and requests and collaborate with key functions throughout Asta.
  • Manage and develop the individuals within the Underwriting Performance function, providing support and guidance to the teams including people development and training.
  • Support on the onboarding of new syndicates, focusing on underwriting strategy, performance and business planning.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • 5+ years' experience in Insurance, ideally working in underwriting, actuarial, finance, operations or related fields.
  • A strong understanding of how a Lloyd's syndicate operates within the market and as part of a managing agency and good commercial knowledge of the Lloyd's market.
  • ACII qualification or equivalent is preferred.
  • IT literate; Excel skills a requisite, with a natural ability to pick up new systems quickly.
