Why work in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a great waterfront city and a vibrant place to live and work. It is an island city with an "inner city" feel, a seaside location packed with attractions and events, and the advantage of fantastic countryside on its doorstep. With a fast-growing university, high-tech industries and a vibrant cultural scene, Portsmouth is a modern city that looks to the future, but which is proud of its unique heritage as the home of the Royal Navy and historic dockyard. With fast road and rail links to London, Brighton and major airports, and ferry links to Europe, it is the perfect place to live and work.

Your new role

The Transport Delivery Team is looking to recruit expertise in project management to enable delivery of a portfolio of strategic and high-profile projects across the spectrum of its services, including digitisation, active travel, road safety, parking management and future transport solutions such as electric vehicle infrastructure.

You will own, develop and deliver the total lifecycle of Transport projects to the agreed time, quality and budgets in support of the vision and objectives of the Portsmouth Transport Strategy and national transport priorities. You will manage projects that are complex, introducing novel technology or new business tools.

You will enable effective reporting of the performance of projects to the Project Board, Programme Manager and to the Senior User(s), identifying issues and providing potential solutions.

What you'll need to succeed

You will have a recognised project management qualification or demonstrable equivalent project management experience.

You will be able to demonstrate effective delivery of the project lifecycle from brief through to closure.

You will be able to communicate verbal messages (which may be complicated or sensitive) clearly, concisely and at a level appropriate to the audience. You will be able to manage multi-disciplinary teams, work with external consultants and procuring contractors. You will be able to demonstrate successful management of large and complex project budgets.

You will have the ability to represent the service at challenging internal/ external meetings, with integrity and confidence and have excellent communication skills to put forward persuasive and compelling arguments.

You will keep up to date with best practice in the profession, seeking innovative approaches to transport issues and developing best practice solutions. You will be able to lead and manage transport projects strategically with the ability to make connections between disparate issues, and creatively combine solutions to solve multiple problems.

If you have a customer focused approach to work which promotes your passion to deliver excellent service and continuous improvement on transport issues for the City's residents, then we would love to hear from you.

Expertise in delivering transport projects is desirable, but not essential.

The role is offered with hybrid working, but all staff are contractually required to spend a minimum of two days in the office.
