Technical Product Manager - Platform and Reliability Engineering

Location: London Reporting to: Head of Technology Operations

The Role:

Are you keen to help us transform a platform that handles around 10,000 requests a second, around 14 million searches per day, and around 1.5 billion minutes of time on site every month, all with less than 53 mins of downtime each year?

The Technical Product Owner is a key part of Platform and Reliability Engineering (PRE) group comprising platform engineers, database administrators, infrastructure, network and site reliability engineers. The team sits within the Product Development organisation, which plays a pivotal role in delivering the overall consumer and customer digital experience underpinning the Rightmove business. We recognise that to deliver the best products and features for our consumers, customers and colleagues we need to work effectively as a healthy, high performing team. We work collaboratively across a mix of product and centralised teams, together working towards Rightmove's strategy.

Rightmove has a significant existing infrastructure, across Google Cloud, on-premises and in SaaS environments. Our goal is to have a world class technology platform with developer experience, high velocity, security and reliability at its core. We are looking for people who can use their experience to help us take a big step forward in our platform vision.

Key Responsibilities:

Platform needs, friction points, wants/desires

  • Develop, maintain and share (with PRE and tech leadership on a cadence) a prioritised view of our customers (Product Teams, Engineers, Security, Product Owners, Data & Analytics team) platform and reliability needs, friction points and wants/desires. Calibrate with data and verbatims.

Platform capabilities

  • Develop, maintain and share (with PRE and tech leadership on a cadence) a view of our platform capabilities. This should cover both present and future e.g. current, existing but not used, available but not purchased, new and upcoming.

Platform metrics

  • Drive the definition and enable the reporting of a set of PRE KPIs for the platform derived from our customer's and our own needs, friction/pain points and wants/desires.
  • Ensure big decisions and/or trade-offs are identified, and recommendations provided and shared taking in account all factors.
  • Ensure incremental value/improvements are delivered through the platform KPIs. Continuously review and re-calibrate KPIs to underlying value.

Platform roadmap(s)

  • In collaboration with customers, PRE and Architects - develop, maintain and share (with PRE tech leadership and product leadership on a cadence) platform roadmaps that are prioritised and articulate the value in new or changing capabilities.
  • Via consultation with Tech Leadership ensure roadmaps align to technology strategy and goals.
  • Ensure big decisions and/or trade-offs are identified and recommendations provided taking in account all factors.
  • Ensure incremental value/improvements are delivered through the platform.

Planning and delivery

  • Provide key input to quarterly and future/longer term roadmap planning alongside the Engineering Managers and Head of Dept
  • End to end ownership of PRE quarterly planning

A typical week as a Technical Product Owner might involve:

  • Building, managing, and communicating the platform roadmap ensuring external dependencies and our customers own roadmaps and priorities are considered.
  • Maintaining a backlog of improvements, clearly describing how they support Rightmove's Technology goals and negotiating with customers (internal) and the Platform and Reliability Engineering Managers to prioritise these alongside the wider priorities for the group.
  • Managing the platform "products" and functionality owned by the team through use of the objectives and KPIs that you will help define.
  • Speaking to vendors and suppliers to gain access to future features and roadmaps
  • Creating and validating business cases that underpin the product/initiative, with clear definition of opportunity, costs, and benefit.
  • Initiating and/or undertaking analysis to highlight any impacts to systems or business processes.
  • Working with engineers and other technical specialists to understand technology limitations, recommendations, and implementation options.
  • Being accountable for requirements definition and value/outcomes of initiatives in the roadmap.

We are looking for someone who:

  • We are looking for someone with a track record of delivering business impact
  • Has in-depth experience shaping and shipping a complex technology platform in a technology and data-led organisation
  • Is adept at synchronising and aligning people at all levels of the organisation, both internal to the team as well as our internal customers and stakeholders
  • Understands DevSecOps, DevEx, and Site Reliability Engineering principles and how they impact product teams and engineers
  • Has awareness of the software development lifecycle as well as the internet infrastructure/platform services, tools, and processes that enable it
  • Is passionate about delivering high quality experiences to end users.
  • Sets and measures clear, realistic, and timely goals.
  • Actively encourages contributions from all those around them, recognising the value of team members input when solving problems.
  • Shows a desire to keep learning and improving themselves and the processes within the team.
