About us:

The Centre for Developmental Neurobiology (CDN) focuses on deciphering how neural circuits assemble during development, from neural patterning to synapse formation and plasticity, and how disruption of this process leads to disease. The research in the Centre is based on a variety of model systems, including human in vitro approaches, and is generally structured around three main programmes: Building brains, Circuit Assembly, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

CDN is one of four departments in the School of Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and is located at Guy's campus. Researchers have access to core facilities providing dedicated support in genotyping, histology, viral production, cell and tissue cultures, bioinformatics, microscopy and image analysis. The department partners with Medical Research Council (MRC) to make up the world-leading MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

About the role:

To provide leadership, management and effective coordination of the Department's Health & Safety, laboratory operations, and technical resources, ensuring legal, regulatory and institutional compliance and the safe, efficient delivery of scientific activities.

The postholder will have oversight of the laboratory based operational resources in partnership with the Managing Director, providing technical support and specialist advice to departmental staff, ensuring equipment and operational practices meet the research staff needs.

They will be responsible for the management of the department's technical team including allocation of work, performance management, appraisal, development and training

The postholder will support strategic planning for departmental and MRC Centre resources and work closely with the Sustainability team to evaluate and develop guidelines.

This role is primarily on site, five days per week at Guy's Campus, reflecting the operational and Health & Safety-critical nature of the post. Occasional flexibility to work remotely may be agreed where operational requirements allow.

This is a full time post 35 and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. MSc in biomedical science or related subject or commensurate experience (e.g.BTech)
  2. Professional Science Registration
  3. Ability to manage and deploy resources (equipment, people, space) effectively balancing research project specific needs with the wider research strategy of the department/campus
  4. Experience of managing a team of people to cover operations in a research environment
  5. Working knowledge of Health and Safety regulations in a wet lab environment, as well as relevant HO legislation
  6. Strong IT skills (MS Office and collaborative tools such as Sharepoint, MS Teams, as well as PPMS, Helix systems or similar software)
  7. Excellent written communication skills and an ability to produce reports and other documents clearly and concisely
  8. Strong awareness and application of financial and environmental sustainability to work

Desirable criteria

  1. PhD in biomedical science or related subject
  2. Local knowledge of Guys Campus, specifically New Hunts House and Hodgkin Building lab
  3. Experience of dealing with suppliers and procuring large items of equipment/service contracts
  4. Technical knowledge of basic laboratory equipment
