Tax Technology Director

About the department

The RSM Centre for Tax Technology (CATT UK) has been established to design and deliver first class technology solutions and change support to our tax business. This includes internally generated software solutions and third-party systems. The team also undertakes the development of (and technical support for) our proprietary (SaSS) offerings in the tax space.

The team is well-resourced with refined operating models and a strong capability. It operates as a dynamic and fast-paced group of like-minded professionals, passionate about delivering technology solutions which meet or exceed the needs of our clients and colleagues.

When you become part of our team, you'll discover a culture celebrating individuality, fresh thinking, flexibility and collaboration, whilst not only embracing change but impacting it. We're simply not a one-size-fits-all firm and work hard to create an environment where our people can make a difference - to themselves, their career, their teams, and to the success of RSM and our clients. As Ali Sapsford (our Head of Tax) states, "personality and fun are as big a part of our culture as is our passion for delivering a premium service to our clients... That sense of team is what attracts clients and staff alike to RSM, and it's one of the things I love about RSM!"

About the role

CATT UK are looking for a tax technology focused Director to lead all aspects of service delivery to the business. Reporting directly to the tax technology leadership team and accountable to the Tax Board, this offers high levels of autonomy, and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to RSM nationally with potential to make an impact on the global stage. Ambitious applicants with the energy and drive to take advantage of this are strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading and driving the successful delivery of multiple projects to technically robust outcomes by allocating resource, deploying relevant skill sets, designing solution architecture, appropriate use of governance procedures, and continued improvement of processes.
  • Primary responsibility for the management of our CATT UK team including project allocation, people development and career conversations, ensuring adequate support and guidance is provided to all team members.
  • Taking an active role in launch processes across our tax business and ensuring demonstrable return on investment is achieved.
  • Pivotal in the continuation and development of the technology service offering by actively leading initiatives to develop multiple tax technology solutions and working with our specialist data analytics, data visualisation, developer and innovation teams.
  • Collaborating with our client facing teams to produce the best possible service for our clients and RSM.

Example project areas:

  • Automation solutions.
  • Knowledge sharing.
  • Engagement Management platforms.
  • Client portals.
  • Bespoke solutions to support particular client delivery areas (such as Capital Allowance reviews etc.).
  • Assessment of technology partners and how emerging capabilities could be deployed for the benefit of our colleagues and clients.
  • Supporting our client facing teams and clients in adapting to an increasingly digital tax landscape.

The CATT UK team is largely London-based and the ideal candidate should look to 'lead from the front' with a visible presence in this office to drive team dynamics. However, RSM offers flexible and hybrid working, so full-time in-office working is not required and we invite individuals to submit their views on the best approach based on their experience and location.

About the ideal candidate

The successful applicant will have previous experience of working in a practice firm with a background in and a passion for the delivery of multiple, complex, interconnected and wide-ranging technology projects. You will also be proactive, with exhibited strategic-thinking and the ability to commit to delivering positive outcomes. A track-record of leading a fast-growing team(s) and developing staff utilising excellent coaching skills is essential.

The ideal candidate will also have a strong awareness of relevant technology challenges, solutions and systems within the accountancy sector, preferably in relation to the provision of tax services, and knowledge of applying governance models to ensure safe and effective implementations. Familiarity with data analytics processes (ideally using Alteryx, Python, etc.), data visualisation products (such as Power BI etc.) and/or developing technologies (for instance AI, LML, RPA, etc.) would enhance your application. You must have an awareness of Making Tax Digital.

The ability to make decisions and operate autonomously where appropriate whilst remaining mindful on when to seek help from or collaborate with colleagues is important. Strong verbal and written skills are essential and previous involvement in launch communications is beneficial.
