Our team is looking for a Manager with either significant experience of preparing the technical aspects of R&D claims, and/or from a strong scientific/engineering background (project manager or equivalent). The role sits within our Corporates performance group (which focusses on FTSE and large inbound clients) and involves working with the national IRI Tax practice. You will be required to use your R&D knowledge and technical experience to help our clients in make claims for R&D Tax relief across a wide spectrum of industry sectors. The role may involve some travel to attend meetings at client sites.

What will you be doing?

  • Work with the engagement team to develop claim methodologies and prepare R&D tax relief claims for submission to HMRC.
  • Lead the process of performing technical interviews to assess projects for R&D eligibility.
  • Prepare (or manage the process for preparing) summary descriptions of the work being undertaken within complex projects, using straightforward language that is clear to understand, which are submitted to HMRC.
  • Manage overall client engagements, which includes liaising with KPMG tax/costing colleagues and client staff to ensure the correct quantification of R&D claims.
  • Liaise with HMRC specialists to facilitate the agreement of R&D claims.
  • Help to establish and maintain strong client relationships with both existing and new clients.
  • Lead in business development opportunities and support the team in proposing engagements with both new and existing clients.

What will you need to do it?

  • Highly client-centric - able to lead technical discussions, which involves explaining complex legislative concepts to scientists / engineers in industry in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ideally a detailed working knowledge of the R&D tax definition and its application to science/engineering activities; alternatively, significant industry experience in a field of science/technology, alongside proven ability to rapidly grasp new technical concepts.
  • Must be capable of producing documentation efficiently/rapidly and to a high level of quality and readability.
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong project management skills/experience and the capability to manage own workload, as well as being able to effectively delegating to other staff members.
  • Must be able to understand the key tax / costing concepts relevant to R&D claim preparation, as well as the capability to work within cross-disciplinary teams.
