Join the UKRI Environmental Sustainability Programme, responsible for implementing the UKRI Environmental Strategy. As part of this team, you'll play a crucial role in achieving and maintaining targets outlined in the strategy and the Greening Government Commitments (GGCs). Collaborate with various teams within UKRI, including Centres and Head Office Directorates, to integrate environmental sustainability practices into our operations and investments. This position is hosted by MRC.

Role Purpose

Reporting to the UKRI Associate Director of Environmental Sustainability Programmes, the purpose of this role is to support UKRI to enhance its environmental sustainability performance whilst meeting reporting requirements. The role splits into three key areas of work which are broken down as follows:

Environmental data management

  • Data standard upkeep and scanning - ensuring the 5 principles of the GHG Protocol are maintained, and reporting adheres to government requirements (including TCFD and GGC)
  • Data analysis - providing insight into UKRI's environmental data, and querying inconsistencies or highlighting opportunities.
  • Data reporting - consolidating carbon data reporting from research councils for merging to produce pan-UKRI figures. Managing and developing relevant reporting dashboards
  • Carbon forecasting - reviewing future projects (typically infrastructure related) and providing estimated impacts on carbon emissions using recognised methodologies

Environmental engagement and improvement activities

  • Coordination and delivery of internal environmental engagement activity - supporting the coordination of UKRI engagement initiatives and networks.
  • Support for UKRI environmental professionals - encouraging collaboration and ensuring a common approach to environmental sustainability.

General support

  • Supporting environmental work led by the UKRI Director and Associate Director for Environmental Sustainability Programmes, as well as individual councils within UKRI remit.
  • Sitting on employee engagement network on behalf of UKRI Environmental Sustainability

Person specification

Essential

  • Graduate level qualification in a sustainability related course or equivalent experience.
  • Good understanding of greenhouse gas reporting.
  • Awareness of the requirements for environmental standards such as ISO14001 and the Carbon Trust Route to Net Zero standard.
  • Good excel skills with an ability to analyse data to provide meaningful insights and keen to develop these further.
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently and be able to apply personal initiative.
  • Good communication skills (written and oral) showing an ability to work with a wide range of people.
  • A proactive approach to sustainability and a desire to develop professionally e.g. through registration with an environmental professional body such as IEMA or CIWM.

Desirable

  • Experience engaging internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working on environmental engagement campaigns. Carbon/ energy management qualifications.
  • Experience using an environmental database to collate and report carbon emissions.
  • Organisational change experience or training.
