Job overview
This is an exciting time to be joining Wirral University Teaching Hospital as we develop our brand new Sterile Services Department. Phase 2 of the project will begin in February 2026.
The Sterile Services Department is on the Arrowe Park site with a stand alone Theatre Endoscopy Decontamination Unit on the Clatterbridge site.
The post holder will be required to manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Sterile Services Department ensuring robust systems of communication, governance and financial management.
You will report directly to the Associate Director of Operations for Peri-operative Medicine.
The Trust has a Decontamination Lead who will provide support and guidance to you to ensure regulatory standards are maintained.
Main duties of the job
The Sterile Services Decontamination Manager is responsible for the operational management of the Sterile Services Department and the provision of a flexible and responsive service which meets the needs of the customer.
- To ensure continuous quality improvement and the management of change necessary to meet organisational objectives and the changing healthcare environment.
- To provide for Trust wide decontamination advice to managers on the compliance of their equipment, procedures, and decontamination processes to ensure compliance with current standards.
- The post holder will be responsible for ensuring national decontamination standards are maintained within the department. You will lead on engaging with other hospital sites that the department sterilises instruments for on a daily basis.
- To lead the Operational development of Decontamination Services for the Trust, in line with national guidelines, advising accountable managers on the implementation of all statutory and regulatory requirements and maintaining compliance with relevant ISO, HTM, IPG & CQC standards.
- The Sterile Services Decontamination Manager is accountable to the Associate Director of Operations for Peri-operative Medicine. Providing effective leadership, operational management and ensuring robust systems of communication, governance and financial management.
- The Sterile Services Manager will lead on projects relating to Sterile Services.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
Essential criteria
- Educated to Master's level or equivalent of work experience
- Previous leadership experience
- Extensive Knowledge in decontamination standards and processes and be willing to access appropriate training
- Must have a qualification in sterile services
- Comprehensive Knowledge of peri-operative practice.
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Good financial knowledge and budgeting
- Must have IT skills (EDCL or equivalent experience)
Desirable criteria
- Experience in writing business case/cost benefit analysis
Personal Attributes

DBS Information
Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing a DBS application is met by the successful applicant/s. DBS costs are recovered via salary deduction following starting in post.
If the post you are applying for requires a DBS - Inline with Trust policy the cost of submitting and processing a DBS for successful applications would be met by the individual themselves. The amount would vary depending on the level required: Standard Disclosure £21.50+£6.50 or Enhanced Disclosure £49.50+£6.50 (please be aware the additional sum is an administration fee and may increase due to inflation). This will be deducted from your salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment.
