Description
As Social Value Manager, you will lead the development, coordination and reporting of Social Value across McBains' bids and commissions.
This is a consultancy-focused role, with a primary emphasis on shaping high-quality, compliant and competitive bid responses, defining proportionate and deliverable commitments, and ensuring these are effectively tracked and reported across projects.
You will act as the central point of expertise for Social Value within the business, supporting bid teams, project leads and senior management to align commitments with client priorities, policy requirements and McBains' wider ESG objectives.
Reporting to the Commercial Director, this strategic role provides significant exposure across the business, shaping both work-winning and delivery approaches.
Key Responsibilities
1.0 Bid Related work (60-70% of your time)
- Lead the development and drafting of high-quality, high-scoring Social Value responses across bids and frameworks
- Translate client Social Value requirements (including the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, PPN 06/20, TOMs frameworks and bespoke evaluation criteria) into clear, measurable commitments aligned to McBains' role as a consultancy.
- Define proportionate and measurable Social Value outputs appropriate to consultancy-led commissions (e.g. training, knowledge sharing, SME engagement, community initiatives)
- Work with bid teams to ensure Social Value responses are aligned with overall win themes and evaluation criteria
- Research relevant local and national policy drivers, including Social Value, skills, employment and net zero priorities, to inform bid responses
- Build and maintain a library of Social Value case studies, evidence and standard responses to support bid quality and consistency
- Develop Social Value case studies and impact narratives for bids, reports and external communications
- Contributing to case study development through client engagement, project calls, and delivery reviews

2.0 PROJECT DELIVERY (20-30% of your time)
2.1 Delivery enablement, Social Value coordination and reporting
- Supporting project teams to align delivery with bid commitments and contractual frameworks
- Ensure Social Value commitments are monitored, evidenced and reported in line with client and framework requirements
- Work with project teams to capture commitments, monitor progress and provide regular performance reporting to clients and senior management
- Organising and coordinating centralised Social Value initiatives across projects and offices
- Coordinate and promote McBains' company-wide volunteering programme (two paid volunteering days per employee per year), aligning volunteering activities with project locations and client priorities where appropriate to maximise local impact
- Providing internal guidance to ensure consistent understanding and delivery of Social Value commitments
2.2 Process development and implementation
- Develop and refine McBains' Social Value approach, ensuring alignment with business objectives and ESG priorities
- Maintain trackers, dashboards and reporting tools used to capture, measure and evidence Social Value performance
- Maintain a pipeline of community partnerships, charities and local organisations that can support delivery of Social Value commitments
- Support the development and implementation of internal policies, guidance and best practice relating to Social Value
3.0 COMPANY WIDE SOCIAL VALUE APPROACH AND COMMITMENTS (10-20% of your time)
3.1 Partnerships, Accreditations & External Positioning
- Identifying, developing, and maintaining strategic partnerships, charters (good work charter, RIBA charter etc) and accreditations relevant to Social Value delivery
- Managing charter applications, renewals, and compliance processes in coordination with HR, Finance, Compliance, and Marketing teams
- Representing the business at external networking events, industry forums, and thought leadership sessions
3.2 EDI & Wider Social Impact Alignment
- Supporting the EDI team in delivery and strategy alignment where it overlaps with Social Value
- Ensuring Social Value activity reinforces inclusion, opportunity, and workforce development priorities
3.3 Continuous Improvement & Engagement
- Monitor emerging trends, policy changes and best practice in Social Value, ESG and public sector procurement
- Identify opportunities to strengthen McBains' Social Value offer across bids and project delivery
- Support internal upskilling through guidance, training and knowledge sharing
- Represent McBains in external forums, events and stakeholder engagement where appropriate
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Good working knowledge of UK Social Value legislation, policy and measurement frameworks (including the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, PPN 06/20 and TOMs), alongside broader ESG principles
- Proven experience in developing high-quality Social Value responses for bids and winning work
- Understanding of how Social Value is applied within consultancy-led commissions, including proportionate delivery models
- Experience in defining measurable and auditable Social Value commitments and reporting against them
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling and compliant responses
- Ability to engage and influence internal and external stakeholders
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines across bids and live projects
- Proactive and solutions-focused approach
