Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Service Manager will work closely and in partnership with other members of the Directorate's management team, in particular Service Directors and Matrons, to achieve agreed performance, financial productivity targets and clinical quality indicators.

The Service Manager will assist the Deputy General Manager, General Manager and the Service Directors in the delivery of objectives across the Directorate as well as directly managing mutually agreed projects and service improvement initiatives.

The Service Manager will have overall responsibility for the management of the Directorate's administrative processes, line managing teams of A & C staff.

The Service Manager will support Service Directors with the management of effective deployment of medical staff.

Where appropriate, the Service Manager will work with peers based on other Trust sites to share learn and drive consistency of clinical practice, business processes and reporting.

The Service Manager will ensure that line management of his or her staff is undertaken professionally and that each member of staff has an appraisal and development and training plan consistent with Directorate, Division and Trust objectives.

Education / Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Educated to Degree Level or equivalent experience
  • Track record of continuous professional and management development

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of computer systems and information networks
  • Post-graduate management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant service or general management experience in the NHS
  • Proven experience of change management
  • Experience of leading projects and service development
  • Experience of cancer waiting times/ NHS national access targets
  • Experience of managing medical staff and medical issues

Desirable criteria

  • Significant operational management experience in a dynamic customer focused environment
  • Project management experience
  • Experience of managing elective admissions and waiting list management

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Problem solving: having the capacity to analyse problems in a logical and structured way using qualitative and quantitative information, generating optional and innovative solutions and adapting approaches to problem-solving to achieve sustainable outcomes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of quality assurance activity
  • Financial Management skills: including budget management, profitability analysis and forecasting
  • People Management skills: including staff management, staff development and teambuilding.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of business planning
  • Knowledge of clinical governance
  • Excellent computer skills including word, excel, PowerPoint with the ability to produce reports

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
