The full-time starting salary is normally £37,332.00 per annum, with progression available in post to £40,581.00 per annum.

Are you an experienced technician with a passion for innovation and sustainability? STEAMhouse, Birmingham City University's centre for collaborative innovation, is seeking a Senior Technician who thrives on creativity, exploring new ideas and interested in bringing the arts and creativity into the STEM subjects.

STEAMhouse is on a mission to "Make innovation happen". Bringing creativity and innovation to the intersection of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM). Our workshops and labs offer cutting-edge facilities where creatives, students, academics, entrepreneurs, and businesses come together to experiment, collaborate, prototype, and develop impactful solutions.

The Role

We're looking for a versatile Senior Technician interested in one or more of the following areas:

  • Bio-materials (including sustainability, circular economy, and zero-waste approaches)
  • Print
  • Textiles
  • Metals and mixed media
  • Digital manufacture, including 3D printing

You'll provide expert technical support, manage equipment and workshops, deliver practical training, and facilitate collaborative projects across diverse sectors. Your role will be crucial in supporting innovative solutions and creative practices within our community.

About You

  • Strong practical experience in one or, preferably more of the specified making disciplines.
  • Interest in making, sustainability, innovation, and creative problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to deliver training and facilitate workshops.
  • Highly organised, with a collaborative and flexible approach.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
