IONATE is a deep technology start-up building the technology backbone for smart grids. Our team is looking for a Senior Transformer Engineer who will enjoy taking the lead on building our cutting-edge Hybrid Intelligent Transformers.

Requiring knowledge in transformer design and development, this position will involve working directly with our Senior Transformer R&D Engineer. You will play a key role in developing and implementing new transformer designs, taking concepts through to commercial product for customers.

With a focus on electrical design and simulation, you will be active in initiating analyses, design reviews, technical discussions and will have an innovative approach with engineering reasoning. Importantly, your work will include supporting project and test activities and help to ensure that these are completed within schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development:

  • Develop new transformer concepts with a deep focus on electromagnetic, thermal, and material design
  • Produce technical requirements and specifications based on customer needs and design concepts
  • Simulate and model transformer designs using advanced tools to analyse parameters such as losses and faults to optimise functionality
  • Produce CAD/CAE designs following a verification and validation process
  • Design and validate electrical designs to customer specifications using in-house tools and improve and update existing IONATE tools

Quality and Compliance:

  • Ensure all designs adhere to safety, quality, and international standards
  • Conduct design verifications and validations to meet industry requirements

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Create and maintain process documents and technical reports
  • Produce verification reports documenting data, calculations, and comparisons

Collaboration and Support:

  • Actively support a multi-disciplinary team including electrical, power electronics, control and embedded systems, and software engineers
  • Assist in onboarding of new manufacturing partners

Requirements

Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Several proven years' experience in design procedures, calculations, modelling, simulations, and material selection for transformer manufacturing
  • Sound knowledge of three phase oil filled/dry type transformers
  • Experience using MATLAB/ ANSYS/ MAGNET/ SolidWorks or equivalent software to simulate and model transformer designs both electrically and mechanically
  • Experience with installation and commissioning of transformers is desirable

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to use FEM / BEM numerical methods and design within engineering constraints
  • Sound knowledge of transformers and related standards: IEC, IEEE/ANSI, Ecodesign
  • Knowledge of transformer and substation protection
  • Python programming skills would be desirable
  • Having experience designing transformers from a mechanical perspective is a plus

Work approach & Mindset:

  • Can work to clear timescales and collaborate with a cross functional team to deliver ambitious projects on time
  • A skilled communicator, working with multiple disciplines and teams across the globe
  • The ability to travel internationally when required
  • A drive to learn new things!

  • Company pension: a competitive, flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It's important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method - but it takes much longer than flying - we will give you an extra 2 days per year.

About IONATE

IONATE is building the hardware-software backbone for smart grids.

Its Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT) replaces transformers with a smart equivalent, integrating high-fidelity data and precise control of voltages, harmonics and reactive power all-in-one. This means the HIT can detect, analyse and resolve power disturbances in real time, should it be used in grids, renewables, industrial assets or data centres.

But in doing so, HITs effectively light up real-time control nodes - transforming power systems one substation at a time. Coordinated by IONATE's Aurora, their network will unlock a step change in efficiency, renewables hosting capacity, and achieve true smart grid capabilities with AI-enabled control.

3 reasons why you should apply:

You'll work on something that matters. The most rewarding aspect of our job is seeing what we build in the lab get used in the real world. As our tech gets used in solar farms, batteries, and electricity grids, your work will help shape the future of the green energy transition.

The thinking you'll do here is not your average exercises on repeat. Building a brand-new class of tech requires cutting-edge ideas. If you like to solve unconventional problems, to be given freedom to explore, to challenge - and be challenged by - field experts, you will fit just right in.

The rocket ship is taking off. Our innovation has been proven and demand is immense. IONATE is now rapidly scaling up and undertaking global projects. Joining early and working side-by-side with our leadership team means ample opportunity to grow your role together with our company.

IONATE has a friendly team that collaborates and supports one-another. If you don't fit all the description above, but you are passionate about the work we are doing and could add value to our team, please get in touch. We believe in making positions fit the skills of people, not the other way around. We are also committed to providing equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone. We value diversity in race, gender identity, sexuality, age, family or civil status, disability, religion, or ethnicity and encourage you to apply wherever you come from.
