Job overview

The post will require the applicant to co-ordinate and support the isotope and brachytherapy practice in Radiotherapy at UCLH. Both practices are large and innovative with an expanding paediatric and adult workload. Some research and data inputting may be required.

The Brachytherapy workload is very varied including paediatrics, urology, gynaecology, skin and bronchus work. The post-holder will look after the day to day running of the brachytherapy department. This will include taking responsibility for the training of junior staff rotating through the department. Clinically it will be necessary to carry out vaginal vault insertions (necessitating a Masters Qualification), and to train others (radiographers and doctors) in this field, as well as co-ordinating theatre sessions and to be accountable for the maintenance and QA of equipment.

Radioisotope therapy is offered together with the nuclear medicine department and includes, in addition to radioiodine and MIBG, therapies targeted to bone, octreotide receptors and lymphoma. Ten protected rooms are provided in the building, 4 of which are in regular clinical use.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be recognised as a practitioner in their specific field, setting an example to junior staff and being available to advise colleagues in other areas. They will deputise for the management where necessary to address day to day operational issues.

They will utilise their interpersonal skills to inspire, motivate and collaborate with all members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate improvements in service. They will work within the quality system, question and propose changes to procedures when necessary, to maintain the validity and appropriateness of the system with new and changing practices.

In partnership with patients and other professionals make sound, ethically-based decisions in the interest of patients.

They will regularly liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team,
including clinicians, engineers, nurses, physics colleagues, students and other allied health professionals, to maintain a positive working relationship across all professional boundaries.

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc in therapeutic radiography or equivalent formal qualification.
  • Health Profession Council (HPC) registration as a therapy or nuclear medicine radiographer.

Desirable criteria

  • Clinical experience in brachytherapy and or Molecular Targeted Radiotherapy

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant post registration experience in same specialty
  • Practical experience in planning and delivering a wide range of radiotherapy techniques.

Communication

Essential criteria

  • Provide information and support about cancer, and communicate highly distressing, sensitive information to patients and relatives/carers.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Provide specialist clinical training and undertake presentations, both within the dept and nationally in conferences and workshops.
  • Plan, carry out and analyse clinical and departmental audits.
  • Plan, prioritise and organise own and section workload.
  • Work flexibly in a variety of situations and participate in shift work as required.
