About the Wolfson Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre
The Wolfson SPaRC (Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre) is one of four departments in the School of Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). The School of Neuroscience is UK's 2nd largest Neuroscience school with over 500 researcher and 200 PhD students. We are based in the heart of London, at the Guy's Hospital Campus of King's College London. Our world-leading University is linked with three teaching hospitals, and with King's Health Partners we are at the forefront of developing new advanced therapies for disorders that are currently untreatable.
Research in the department spans three main themes: Chronic Pain & Migraine, Spinal Cord & Brain Repair, and Hearing Loss & Sensory Systems. Our fundamental mission is to understand the biological mechanisms behind these neurological and sensory disorders and harness this knowledge to develop new therapeutic strategies.
Professor Marzia Malcangio's group research focus in the understanding of neuroinflammation mechanisms to combat pathological pain in neurodegenerative diseases and chronic pain syndromes.
About the role:
We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced technician to provide technical and organizational support for Malcangio's research group. The postholder, will work closely providing support to a postdoctoral researcher on an MRC programme grant studying neuroimmune interactions and pain in collaboration with Queen Mary University London, University of Leeds and Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company.
The role holder will work closely with research staff and students on a day-to-day basis, with most of the time spent on assistance with laboratory technical duties and in particular, molecular biology and cell isolation and culture.
The appointee will also interact with the core technical team of the Wolfson SPaRC providing support for strategic research initiatives under direction of the deputy building manager.
It is expected a professional attitude to matters of laboratory hygiene, organisation and safety and adopt the principles of the IoPPN code of conduct into work and the department.
This is a part time role (FTE 50% 17.5 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 3 years. Please note that as the role is part time, the salary indicated in this ad will be amended accordingly.
About you:
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. BSc or equivalent qualification in Biomedical sciences or related biological program
2. Previous experience of work in a research laboratory; experience in relevant technical/scientific posts OR considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.
3. Experience on Cell culture; Aseptic Technique and sterile handling of cells and reagents
4. Work experience with animal model. Experience of in-vivo techniques eg., rodents
5. Competency in and firm understanding of basic molecular or biochemical techniques used in biomedical research labs.
6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team prioritising workload.
7. Excellent communication skills
8. Working knowledge of standard software packages and platforms e.g., Microsoft office, Teams, Outlook
Desirable criteria
1. Immunohistochemistry and microscopy
2. Flow cytometry
3. Experience with providing general lab housekeeping support and resources administration.
