ABOUT THE ROLE

The role holder will be expected to deliver high quality technical services for teaching and research, using specialist technical knowledge, in particular, tissue culture. As a senior technician they will be responsible for the delivery of practical sessions in support of the undergraduate teaching programme, actively engaging in research, and demonstrating scientific tasks and procedures to staff and students. In addition, the post holder will be actively involved in management of faculty laboratory spaces with specific emphasis on health and safety, line management responsibilities as well as involvement in planning of specialist facilities. They will be a skilled individual who is self-motivated, highly organised, and works well as part of a team.

This post is part time working 2 days per week (Thursday and Friday), and fixed term until March 2025.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role you will:

  • Support the Technical Manager by contributing to the provision of professional expertise and support, ensuring that the service provides high levels of stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Supervise routine procedures, and implementation of Health and Safety at Work (HSAW) policies within specialist facilities to HSAW standards in accordance with the needs of teaching and appropriate research
  • Be involved in planning specialist facility layout and costing of apparatus & resourcing for new and existing facilities.
  • Be responsible for the planning, development and provision of support and equipment across facilities- including but not limited to:
    • The preparation of materials and equipment for teaching, enterprise and CPD activities
    • Setting up and operating specialist equipment
    • Maintenance, review and upgrade of specialist equipment and materials
    • Method and practical exercise development
    • Care, routine maintenance and servicing of appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Lead in the continuing development of specialist facilities and processes,
  • Lead, supervise and manage people and/or facilities working within University policies, procedure, processes and working practices.
  • Advise, assist and instruct staff and students on the appropriate procedures for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, security and use of equipment and facilities in the faculty.
  • Advise, assist and instruct staff and students in the use of specialist apparatus and equipment used in accordance with the needs of the academic and CPD programmes.
  • Deliver demonstrations and training sessions to staff and student groups with information of a highly specialist nature relating to the equipment, practices and procedures. This may involve leading timetabled sessions or providing highly specialist support in sessions.
  • Produce and develop learning materials, work instructions and detailed equipment guides for use by students and staff in practical settings, in line with specified academic outcomes.
  • Contribute to the work of the academic departments in maintaining its accreditation with professional bodies.
  • Participate in selection, recruitment and induction of new Technical support staff.

Qualifications

Qualified to degree level or equivalent professional experience in one or more of the practice based subjects offered by the faculty.
