Serco are recruiting for a Senior Technical Superintendent to join the Offshore team at Portsmouth with hybrid working an option. The key purpose of this role is toensure the safe, efficient, and compliant technical operation of assigned offshore vessels through proactive maintenance planning, effective problem-solving, and close collaboration with crews, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. The role drives high engineering standards, continuous improvement, and technical leadership across vessel operations, while supporting organisational sustainability goals and social value commitments

Main Accountabilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day technical performance of allocated DMS NG offshore and company managed vessels, ensuring full compliance with Flag, Class, company standards whilst maintaining agreed availability requirements.
  • Champion professional standards and continuous development within vessel engine departments. Promote consistency, competence, and pride in engineering performance.
  • Plan, coordinate, attend, and supervise all aspects of vessel dry-dockings and major maintenance periods. Ensure safe dry-docking operations and adherence to planned scope, timeline, and budget. Liaise with operations to ensure appropriate crewing and support during docking / maintenance periods.
  • Prepare, manage, and monitor vessel budgets; investigate variances and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising safety or quality. Regularly attend forecast/budget discussions.
  • Proactively engage with and lead the implementation and continuous development of the SEAMS (based on IBM Maximo system) planned maintenance system. Ensure vessels strict adherence to maintenance schedules, accurate and detailed technical records, and continuous improvement of the depth and relevance of maintenance data specific to each vessel.
  • Ensure vessel certifications, inspections, and surveys (Flag/Port State/Class/MOD Regulator) are up to date. Lead or support external audits and inspections. Routinely engage with Flag/Port State/Class/MOD Regulator to collaborate and develop a forward focus on regulatory standards for vessels under company management.
  • Lead or support investigations into technical incidents. Perform root cause analysis, generate reports, and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented. Senior Technical Superintendent will be a member of the Major Incident Management Team.
  • Maintain oversight of defect reporting and resolution processes. Prioritise and track defect rectification to minimise operational disruption. In conjunction with vessel crew utilise SEAMS and other monitoring tools to identify defect trends and areas for improvement within company managed vessels.
  • Conduct planned (or emergent) vessel technical inspections. In conjunction with crew generate detailed action plans, assign owners, and monitor actions through to closure.
  • Actively engage in reviewing the effectiveness and relevance of technical procedures within the company's Integrated Management System (IMS), proposing and implementing improvements where necessary. Collaborating with vessel crew, other Technical Superintendents and Maritime Assurance Lead.
  • Monitor and verify the quality of vessel-specific technical risk assessments and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring alignment with best practice, regulatory requirements, and continuous improvement principles.
  • Identify and implement improvements in technical operations, engineering procedures, and safety performance. Drive best practices, challenge norms and promote innovation within the technical teams afloat and ashore.
  • As the professional lead, line manage vessel Engineers, providing direction, mentoring, and performance oversight. Conduct appraisals, support development, manage recruitment and resolve personnel challenges.
  • Collaborate with Operations, HSEQ and compliance teams to ensure technical readiness for offshore campaigns, including equipment and appropriate regulatory checks.
  • Actively contribute to technical initiatives that support company objectives on social value, decarbonisation, and future sustainability capabilities, including low-carbon technologies and greener engineering practices. Represent the company as a subject matter expert alongside stakeholders driving improvement in the company's social value and sustainability vision
  • Execute responsibilities in line with the company Safety Management System (SMS) and Maritime Integrated Management System (IMS), ensuring procedures are followed, audited, and improved as needed.
  • Manage relationships and performance of contractors, service providers, and OEMs. Verify instructed scopes of work, verify appropriate risk assessments and method statements are in place and ensure works completed are undertaken in line with company standards

What you'll need to do the role:

  • Able to achieve SC Clearance.
  • Flexible to travel when required to other Serco sites.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in maritime operations, with at least 3-5 years in an Engineering management role ashore or afloat.
  • Proven experience in leading vessel inspections and incident investigations.
  • Chief Engineer (Unlimited) CoC.
  • Previous or current experience in a Superintendent or similar shore-based role.
  • Strong working knowledge of Class, Flag, IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code and ISO requirements.
  • Proven track record in managing dry-dockings, major repairs, and machinery overhauls.
  • Experience and proven track record in MoD and commercial maritime relations- Desirable
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to assess and mitigate risks.
  • Proficiency in using maritime safety and compliance software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of the MoD and commercial marine market in which the contract operates.
  • Evidences a track record in developing and implementing a strategy and plans to achieve success in service delivery and growth.
  • Ability to create and communicate a compelling vision and sense of purpose that motivates teams at all levels
  • Demonstrate ability to network internally and externally and influence effectively to navigate complexity and deliver results.
  • Has a drive for delivering a quality service, values positive customer feedback and understands how to improve effectiveness.
  • Strong knowledge across all business functions, including finance, business development, people management and communications.
  • Excellent analytical skills with ability to assimilate information quickly, and communicate key messages simply and effectively to the business
  • An effective communicator, with the confidence and ability to deliver formal reports and presentations both to clients and internal senior stakeholders.
