The School of Life Course & Population Sciences is one of six Schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King's College London. The School unites over 400 experts in women and children's health, nutritional sciences, population health and the molecular genetics of human disease. Our research links the causes of common health problems to life's landmark stages, treating life, disease and healthcare as a continuum. We are interdisciplinary by nature and this innovative approach works: 91 per cent of our research submitted to the Subjects Allied to Medicine (Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences and Women's Health cluster) for REF was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We use this expertise to teach the next generation of health professionals and research scientists. Based across King's Denmark Hill, Guy's, St Thomas' and Waterloo campuses, our academic programme of teaching, research and clinical practice is embedded across five Departments.
About the role
The School of Life Course & Population Sciences is seeking to appoint a new Senior Technical Manager to oversee and provide management and high quality technical support to the School and the wider Faculty/ University. The post holder is a member of the School's professional services team and will report to the School Manager.
The post holder will lead on technical support across all departments supported by technical operations managers and technicians, including ensuring compliance with health and safety and other governance requirements, resource management (including space and equipment), upholding good laboratory practice and contributing to strategic planning and development of School policy.
The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in technical management and a broad knowledge of scientific procedures, experience of line management, excellent communications and networking skills and an ability to work independently, setting the technical agenda for the School.
This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Minimum level 6 qualification in a relevant subject, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, plus substantial work experience in relevant technical/scientific service management posts OR Extensive work experience in relevant technical/ scientific posts with a managerial experience/ or qualification
- Comprehensive technical experience and knowledge of a wide range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with advanced computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills to build a strong network to support the delivery of the service
- Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent analytical, planning and organisational skills, able to manage staff, projects, and facilities, setting performance standards and establishing protocols to deliver these
- Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability
- Excellent organisational skills to be able to coordinate diverse, multi-site teams to support the strategic aims of the School/ Faculty/ University
- Strong record of managing staff and other resources, as evidenced by setting, delivering and monitoring performance standards
- Contributing to and leading high level strategies, defining the aims, objectives and drawing these down into team members' work plans
Desirable criteria
- Formal Health & Safety qualification e.g. NEBOSH/IOSH
- Financial training relevant to the management and control of budgets, or experience of managing budgets

- Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing the negative impacts
