Job description
As part of a team of highly professional Industrial and Waste Regulators you will play a leading role in tackling a diverse range of environmental challenges in sectors such as Combustion, On shore Oil and Gas, Cement and Lime, Food and Drink, Waste Incineration and Chemical manufacturing.
Do you want to make the East Midlands a better place for people and wildlife by ensuring that our Regulated Industry Department remains one of the best performing teams in the country? If you do, we're looking for a Senior Technical Leader who has the attitude, behaviours, courage and knowledge to make this happen.
As a Senior Technical Leader, you'll help lead the important things; assurance, continuous improvement, KPI delivery, learning and development and Quality Management. Your measure of success will be how successfully you drive these. You'll be the role model for our officers and this will be reflected in your previous successes and credentials.
Your leadership qualities will be blended with technical acumen. You might advise on the regulation of some very complex activities from Derbyshire's cement plants to the power stations along the Trent Valley, to Scunthorpe's integrated steel works. You'll also plan and deliver the direction of our work, so you'll have to be able to understand the strategic, tactical and operational challenges that present as well as being able to manage other particularly challenging technical or public interest issues.
The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
The team
You'll be a senior leader in one of the four Installation Teams based in the East Midlands. Together with the three Waste Teams in East Midlands, you'll be part of a fifty strong Regulated Industry department, regulating everything from the steelworks in Scunthorpe and cement plants in the Peak District, to the power stations along the Trent Valley and all sites in between.
Experience/skills required
Passionate about the environment, you'll have considerable experience of technical leadership and be able to deliver results through others to the right standard, on time and within budget. You're able to focus on our priorities, even when conflicting demands conspire to knock us off course.
You're able to use your initiative to take timely decisions to manage and prioritise complex workload to tight deadlines. You'll demonstrate strategic thinking in taking forward the department's work and enhancing our reputation. You'll have strong commitment to people in our team and to our customers and have good communication, coaching, influencing and mentoring skills.
Knowledge of regulating industry or experience of leading in industry is desirable, and, because auditing is key skill, you'll be able to demonstrate that you're an exemplar environmental auditor, perhaps you are already a Principal Environmental Auditor.
You'll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
Contact and additional information
You'll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We'll help you find a role to suit your needs. Appropriate training will be given.
You will be able to work flexibly from the office and from home and will be expected to undertake site inspections and audits within the East Midlands Area. You will therefore need a full UK driving licence.
We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnights may be required.
Please read the Candidate / Additional Information Pack for information. Any queries, contact steve.proffitt@environment-agency.gov.uk
Applications are "blind" assessed using your answers to the competency questions.
Interviews will be held face to face on 19 March at the Nottingham, Trentside office.
