From April 2025, we are seeking to appoint a Senior Teaching Assistant to support the inclusion of children and young people with a vision impairment.
The Vision Support Service is based at Tapton School and supports children throughout the city from 0-25 years.
The successful candidate will have experience of working with children and young people, with special educational needs, preferably in a Primary/Secondary setting. The post involves offering support to visually impaired children and young people in the classroom, across the full range of the curriculum.
This will also include some individual specialist work on a 1:1 or small group basis. Preparing braille, large print and audio materials for visually impaired students is also part of the role, and so excellent ICT skills are essential. Full training in the modification of resources will be given. There is an expectation to learn braille and obtain a qualification within two years of starting the role.
The post is 30 hours per week over 4 or 5 days for 39 weeks per year. Applicants must have an NVQ Level 3 qualification for teaching assistants or equivalent.
The post may involve travelling and working in, different school settings across the city and may include working with some Post 16 students in College.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
