From September 2024, we are seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Specialist Teaching Assistant. The role will support the inclusion of children and young people with a vision impairment. The Vision Support Service is based at Tapton School and supports children throughout the city from 0-25 years. The successful candidate will have experience of working with children and young people, with special educational needs, preferably in a Secondary setting, with relevant experience in other school settings/age phases.
The post involves offering support to visually impaired children and young people in the classroom, across the full range of the curriculum. This will also include some individual specialist work on a 1:1 or small group basis. Preparing braille, large print and audio materials for visually impaired students is also part of the role and so excellent ICT skills are essential. Full training in the modification of resources will be given. There is an expectation to learn braille and obtain a qualification within two years of starting the role.
Applicants must have an NVQ Level 3 qualification for teaching assistants or equivalent. Although the position will initially be based within the integrated resource provision at Tapton School, the post may involve travelling and working in, different settings across the city and may include working with some Post 16 students in College, at Foundation level.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
