Clinical/Counselling Psychologist - Senior Structured Clinical Management Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen to establish and oversee the provision of evidenced-based Structured Clinical Management (SCM) for service users with Complex Emotional Needs (CEN) within the Barnet and Enfield Core Teams. You will work with SCM Practitioners and alongside other mental health practitioners in the Core teams providing SCM assessments, formulations, and group and individual interventions.

As well as receiving your regular supervision from the specialist Complex Emotional Needs (PD) Pathway, you will also offer group and individual supervision to colleagues based in the SCM pathway as well as the wider Core Team.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and experienced qualified Mental Health Practitioner (e.g. Psychologist, RMN, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Psychotherapist) with additional training in SCM. In addition, the ideal candidate will have worked with services users with CEN offering assessment, formulation and therapeutic intervention.

Main duties of the job

The role will require the post holder to:
• Collaboratively working alongside Core Team Key workers to support identification and undertake assessment of emotional and psychological needs of patients within the Core Teams who have a confirmed or suspected personality disorder diagnosis and personality disorder traits which may not meet the criteria for a diagnosis of Personality Disorder.
• Formulate and implement appropriate SCM treatment plans
• Liaise with other professionals to contribute to the establishment of continuity of care across the service
• Offer consultation and support to Core Team colleagues within an SCM framework
• Offer SCM supervision to the Practitioners in the pathways and other colleagues working with an SCM model.
• Work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures in close collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team
• To undertake frequent risk assessment and risk management for individual patients within the formal therapy setting as well as on the telephone or occasionally on domiciliary visits, and to provide advice to other professions on aspects of risk assessment and risk management, including both the immediate physical risk to the safety of clients, as well as the psychological aspects
• To be able to work and travel across the geographical area or across integrated teams.

In order to meet the needs of the new Partnership services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Enfield and Harringay Trust and Camden and Islington Trust. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.

Qualifications/ Registrations

Essential criteria

  • Doctoral level training or equivalent in Clinical or Counselling Psychology including two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a Clinical or Counselling psychologist (or accreditation pending if you are a trainee clinical or counselling psychologist due for qualification in September 2024)

Desirable criteria

  • Recognised training in teaching/mentorship/ supervision
  • Working towards or completion of SCM Supervisor status
  • Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) Basic training
  • Basic Training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Basic Training Certificate in Structured Clinical Management or willingness to engage in SCM training

Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Strong interest and desire to work with clients with complex emotional needs and personality disorder in trauma informed way
  • Minimum of two years' experience of working directly with patients with Personality Disorder, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of supervising professionals from different clinical backgrounds other than own core profession.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working and involvement in developing risk management plans and psychological treatment pathways

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of service development or of a leadership role.

Experience/ Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
  • Ability to contain, explore and formulate an understanding of high levels of distress both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision of other staff, both individually and in an organisational context.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the post-holder's professional body
  • Degree level research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields.
  • Experience of working with service users experiencing suicidal ideation and self harm.

Desirable criteria

  • Skills in setting up and running groups
  • Enthusiasm about evidence-based practice and about using patient feedback as well as team performance data to develop service as best suited for the needs of our patient population.

Essential criteria

  • An enthusiasm and commitment to the psychological treatment of Personality Disorder
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and form positive therapeutic relationship with service users and carers
  • Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to "hold" the stress of others
  • Ability to demonstrate the North London Partnership Values

Desirable criteria

  • A commitment to the evaluation of services, enthusiasm for both multi-professional and uni-professional audit
  • Desire to take up leadership in service development of psychological treatment services

Other Requirements

Essential criteria

  • Ability to identify provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situation and severely challenging behaviours
  • Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
  • To be able to work and travel across the geographical area or across integrated teams
