Job overview

The Major trauma ward is one of the four trauma centers in London. We are recruiting a Senior Trauma Staff Nurse for our team. We provide nursing care for all trauma patients in the North-West of London. The Major Trauma Ward is a 19 bedded ward delivering level 1 care to a complex group of poly-trauma patients including intracranial, spinal cord and column injuries, as well as cardiothoracic, vascular, orthopaedic, plastic, general surgery and maxillofacial injuries.

We are a busy and fast paced ward delivers expert care to patients with tracheostomies, chest drains, invasive analgesia and have five beds for patients requiring cardiac monitoring. Our daily multidisciplinary approach to patient care allows us to achieve the best outcomes for our patients, who may be facing life changing injuries as a result of trauma.

You will work as part of the trauma team supporting the division and manager to ensure an effective and high quality of care & service is delivered to every major trauma patient.

We are looking for a innovative, driven individual who is passionate about delivering high quality patient centered care to join our trauma team.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of trauma specialist nursing care and deputise for the ward matron in their absence. This will involve dealing with a wide range of clinical situations as an integral part of the ward team.
  • The role is vital in monitoring and maintaining polices, standards of nursing care and staff development.
  • You will take an active role in coordinating and facilitates the flow of patients through the trauma pathway to ensure gold standard nursing care was followed.
  • The post holder will provide clinical supervision to staff on the ward and may undertake clinical audits; teaching sessions and ensure the safety and well- being of patients and staff.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Current Nursing Registration as NMC General Nurse with no restrictions
  • Recognised Qualification diploma level or above
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Management and Leadership training
  • Trauma course/ Consider Trauma experience

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Worked in an UK NHS Hospital caring for acute patients
  • Working in a fast-paced acute ward environment
  • Worked in a leadership role and been exposed to management
  • Have experience of Audits and improvement projects within the ward setting

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of the trauma pathway and trauma nursing care within a trauma centre
  • Trauma care experience

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria

  • Planning, prioritising and organisational skills whilst working as a member of the team
  • Understanding the trauma pathway and specialist trauma nursing skills
  • To lead the nursing team in the absence of the Matron
  • To have direct involvement in the provision of education and development of the nursing team to ensure that appropriate learning opportunities are provided, and all staff feel supported.
