Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective leadership of the ward
To assist and support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services
Assesses patients, plans, implements care, provides specialist advice and maintains associated records
Working autonomously to manage a caseload of patients, acting as a lead assuming responsibility and accountability for assessing, implementing and evaluating care for the designated clinical area
Undertake and support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in setting and auditing nursing standards in the department, including the implementation of improvement recommendations
To take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensuring incidents and near misses are reported, through promoting a no blame culture
To create an environment that fosters good communication between patient and health care professionals, that meets individual's needs
Be an effective communicator and be a role model in liaising with the community and other members of the health care team
Assess the need for, plan, and implement suitable induction and staff development programmes for nursing staff in conjunction with the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse within the clinical area to ensure effective care of all patients
Assist the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to ensure that all students and newly appointed staff have identified mentors / preceptors

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC Registered Nurse
- 1st level degree in Nursing or related subject
- SACT passport (unless applying for developmental post)
- Mentorship qualification
- Undertaken 12 months preceptorship
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Level 7 study
- Advanced Communication skills or equivalent

Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 12 months preceptorship
- At least 18 months post registration experience in an acute setting
- Demonstratable experience of taking charge a ward, including allocation of safe staffing
- Experience of mentoring students and supervising unqualified staff
- Experience of working under pressure and demonstratable coping strategies
- Experience of caring for patients receiving palliative and/or End of Life Care
Desirable criteria
- At least 12 months in a haematology, oncology or palliative care setting
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
- Awareness of clinical governance and risk management issues
- Demonstratable leadership qualities
- Demonstrate self-awareness and critical reflection
- Ability to prioritise workload and escalate appropriately through the correct channels
- Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information
- Ability to administer SACT (unless developmental post)
- Ability to undertake pre-SACT assessments and new patient information sessions (unless developmental post)
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of the current clinical and professional issues within Cancer Nursing
- Awareness of the ACCEND Framework
- Experience of managing the SACT hotline to give safe and effective advice to patients receiving SACT
- Knowledge of the Acute Oncology Service and its benefits
