Job overview
Are you an experienced band 5 nurse or already a band 6 nurse, looking for a new challenge? If so, we have an exciting new opportunity for a committed, motivated and clinically expert surgical nurse to join our team as a Charge Nurse on Valentine Ellis ward. We are offering a Fixed term Secondment post.
Valentine Ellis Ward is a very fast-paced 23-bedded acute Trauma, Orthopaedic and Plastics Ward. We work closely with our Major Trauma Centre, so we also facilitate patient flow for stepdown of Major Trauma, spinal trauma and non-trauma neuro patients.
As a Band 6 Charge Nurse, you will play a crucial role in delivering expert clinical care, leading and managing the nursing team, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care. You will be responsible for providing clinical leadership, supporting and supervising the nursing staff, and coordinating patient care to ensure a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. This post is pivotal in providing visible nursing leadership within a multi-professional team. The post holder must be a good team leader who is willing to assist and deputise for the Ward Matron when required. You will need to have excellent communication and negotiation skills as you will be working in collaboration with the wider MDT.

Main duties of the job
- To provide high quality, effective, individualised care to all patients that is compassionate and caring.
- To assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate them without supervision
- You will be expected to lead the ward on a day-to-day basis in the absence of the Ward Matron, maintaining high level of nursing standards.
- To assist in leading and monitoring the performance of the nursing team
- To deputise for the Matron when required
- Be responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.
- Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.
- You will need to adhere to the Trust's Core Values and behaviours and encourage this in all other staff members.

Education/ qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Teaching Qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Relevant specialist course or equivalent experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- A minimum of 2 years post registration experience
- Evidence of positive involvement in staff educational/training provision in ward environment i.e. mentorship
Desirable criteria
- Experience of leading and developing a team
- Knowledge of quality, standard setting, benchmarking and audit.
- Experience of providing teaching sessions
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
Essential criteria
- Teaching
- Ability to organise ward activities and to use initiative
- Competency in medication administration including IV medications
- Knowledge of the NMC Code of Conduct
