Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated registered adult nurse to join our Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Acute Stroke Unit based at the Charing Cross Hospital site.

As a Band 6 nurse you will care for patient's acute phase following a stroke. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and specialist skills in the assessment of stroke and to support patients through their stroke pathway, post interventional treatments, as well as supporting patients in their early phase of rehabilitation and discharge.

The multi-disciplinary team work closely within stroke services and also have regular contact with other hospitals within the network, therefore excellent communication skills are essential.

You will be supported by a highly motivated senior nursing team which includes a Clinical Practice Educator and Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialist and you will be supported within the role with on-going training which includes the Stroke Foundation Programme and completion of specific stroke competencies and have access to a wide range of learning opportunities , to help take your career in the right direction, this will help support you to develop the competence and confidence you need as an effective, independent healthcare professional. You'll receive a full induction programme; benefit from ward and classroom-based training and clinical skills assessments.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality, effective, individualised care to all patients that is compassionate and caring.
  • To provide expert nursing assessment, intervention and evaluation within the acute stroke services.
  • To improve the patient experience
  • To assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate them without supervision
  • To assist in leading and monitoring the performance of the nursing team
  • To deputise for the Ward Manager when required
  • To attend rehabilitation meeting and help to promote the rehabilitation process.
  • To complete safe care data for every shift
  • Promote safe and timely discharge
  • Promote reducing length of stay
  • Provide teaching and support to junior staff
  • Liaison with specialist MDT, GP in primary care and other secondary care agencies, Patients and relatives within the clinical area

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Requires NMC Registration on relevant or relevant part of the register
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Diploma or working towards Degree

Desirable criteria

  • Post registration course (CPD) relevant in clinical speciality
  • Degree/Masters
  • Leadership Course

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience within in neuroscience setting

Desirable criteria

  • Minimum of 18 months as a band 5
  • Leadership experience
  • Experience with managing patients relevant to specialist area
  • Experience in people management and improving the patient experience

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Good IT skills, understanding of office works suite, excel and power point
  • Proven experience within a rehabilitation setting
  • Proven written communication skills

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience within a rehabilitation setting
  • Experience within audit
  • Experience with Quality Improvement Projects
